Scenario – New Hotel in Aviemore, Scotland Aviemore is a small town in the Highland Region of Scotland. Originally little more than a bridging point for the River Spey, it grew as a result of the building of the railway junction in 1898. Subsequent tourism has led to the development of a town that caters for visitors all year round, with winter sports such as skiing and summer activities such as walking, climbing, cycling and water sports being popular. Although there are other industries in Aviemore (such as an excellent brewery!) the town's economy is very heavily dependent on the tourism industry. See www.visitaviemore.com for more details on the town and the tourist industry in this area. Mapping web sites such as www.streetmap.co.uk, maps.google.com and maps.bing.com will show you where Aviemore is and the layout of the town. A new hotel complex is being built on the outskirts of Aviemore that will cater for this tourist industry, having on site facilities such as a swimming pool and gym, bars and restaurants, rooms in the main hotel and separate log cabin lodges and a large golf course. The hotel will be on Dalfaber Road, roughly between the Railway and the River Spey, near the station. See maps on line. Since there is so much competition for tourism in Aviemore, the hotel needs to install a new Internet connection to provide customers with the level of connection they now expect from a high quality hotel. (Note that we are only interested in the connection between the hotel and the Internet. We are not interested in the local area networking in the hotel at all. Do NOT discuss LAN technologies in your report.) Note: Aviemore is a real place and Dalfaber Road is a real road in Aviemore but the new hotel is fictitious. There isn't a building site at this location. You must work to the information in this assignment specification and assume that there is space to build this hotel. Requirements You are to provide a report for the owners of the new hotel that explains the options available to provide high speed and reliable Internet connections to their location. You should produce a formal report that outlines a suitable range of connection technologies that could be used for this location. You MUST focus on this location. Consider the problems that this location presents and how the technologies resolve those problems. You need to make recommendations for this location and clearly justify these recommendations. You need to cover the entire backhaul connection route from the premises to a major Internet backbone. You do not need to discuss local distribution of the Internet connection at the premises. i.e. do not discuss LAN technologies. You should research the connection technologies that are currently available in Aviemore using the various web sites that provide such information. You should also consider novel connection technologies that are not commonly used but may be appropriate for this location, even if they are not currently available here. A Visit Scotland grant is available to help the local tourist industry with getting Internet connections, so the cost is not a major issue, but you do need to provide guidelines on cost and consider it alongside other aspects of the technologies discussed.
