Assignment title: Management
Question
Business Management
Q
1.1 Design problem and design brief
In this section, you should implement the following tasks:
Task 1: Present and write the design problem of the project. Design problem is important for design and product development. The design problem is the input for writing the design brief.
Task 2: Write the design brief for the product based on the proposed design problem.
It is noted that the design brief is very important for further product design and development steps, especially when you develop the product design specification (PDS) and the design concepts as well as the function diagrams.
The design brief must be consistent with the information in the PDS and function diagrams.
There are many similar products in the markets which are used for different purposes and applications. In the scope of the DPD course, it is required to propose a product to be developed by the DPD group with typical functions and features for design and development activities that are relevant for demonstration of the following work packages and tasks:
WP1: Design Problems, Design Brief and Product Specification
WP2: Concept Design, Selection and Evaluation
WP3: Embodiment and Detailed Design
WP4: Product Safety and Liability: Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
WP5: Design documentation, Virtual and/or Physical Prototypes
You are free to define Design Problem, Design Brief for a product to be designed and developed. Design Problem and, Design Brief should be relevantly defined so that you are able to demonstrate well the key implementations of DPD steps: Concept Design, Embodiment Design, Detailed Design, Product Safety and Liability (FMEA), and Design Documentation.
1.2 Product design specification
Based on the above design problem and design brief, you are able to develop the basic product design specification (PDS) for the product to be developed. It would be good to present and explain how you develop PDS, based on the 4 typical methods, including (1) General Check List for PDS, (2) Key PDS criteria, (3) Practical guide and form, and (4) Need and metrics method. You may use the methods (1), (2) and (3) to develop the basic PDS for the beginning steps. Then you should use the need and metrics method to develop the specific PDS for concept design, concept selection and evaluation.
When presenting about the use of the need and metrics method to develop PDS, it would be good to present the 3 main steps as follows:
(1) Step 1: Preparation of the matrix of interpretation of needs from customer needs.
2) Step 2: Preparation of the metrics from the table of customer needs and interpretation of needs.
(3) Step 3: Prioritization of the needs and metrics as well as development of measures and values for the metrics.
