Assignment title: Management
What Style is your house? Read Chapter One in your book and the articles and power points in Unit Two. Visit the website of the Illustrated Architectural Dictionary. Describe in detail your home. Start with the roof and work your way down. Is the roof a steeply pitched front gable, maybe it is a low-pitched hip roof, or perhaps it is a gambrel style roof? What kind of cornice line does it have, maybe a full entablature with dentils, or maybe it has deep overhanging eaves with no cornice line. What is interesting about the facade and fenestration? What about balance? Is it symmetrical or asymmetrical? What about the front door, perhaps it has a transom with full sidelights, or a fan light with a classical surround, does it have columns and pilasters? What kind of windows does it have? Maybe 8 over 8 double hung or casement, or hoppers. This is the kind of information I am looking for. Be specific As you go out begin to notice the facade of the buildings around you. Learn to identify the details, what order of architecture are the columns, does it have dome? Once you learn these basic details it will allow you to put a style and perhaps a date on a building. Have fun with this assignment. One book that I would highly recommend is: Mcalester, Virginia and Lee Mcalester. A Field Guide to American Houses. New York, New York: Alfred A Knopf. 1996. Create a power point presentation: With an image of your house or a similar house then label the details that support your findings
