Previously, career development and management were very much the responsibility of an individual with support from the management of the organisation one worked for. However,we personally believe that with globalisation, the problems faced with skills shortage has led to the organisation one works for to put more concentration in this area. Organisations now do not face the threat of losing skilled staff to local companies but also to international companies as people become more mobile and more open to work outside their home countries. Taking this into consideration, as much as an individual needs to put focus on their individual career development and managenment, more and more organisations are putting focus in this area. Multi national companies are putting renewed efforts in coaching and mentoring of their skilled staff and working towards achieving career progression via objectives set in performance appraisals. Big corporations such as banks are also giving high potential staff the opportunity to go for secondments in other markets. This of course is a joint decison made by the staff chosen as well as the organisation but is one where the staff concerned gets exposure to working in a different market.
