d) Workplace health and safety implications for the developed sustainability policy
2. Describe internal and external sources of information you would use to plan and develop your sustainability policy

Based on the likely effectiveness, avaible timeframes and cost, describe how you would make your decisions and recommendations between the following options for reducing water:
Installing rainwater tanks and plumbing them to supply toilets
Replacing all toilets with dual-flush systems
Replacing all taps with low-flow alternatives
5. Imagine you are responsible for an initiative to improve the amount of paper, glass and plastic that is recycled by your organisation. Three months after announcing the initiative, you receive the following information:
Recyclable waste collections have increased by 5 per cent, versus the target of 15 per cent
General waste collections have largely remained static over the three-month
period
General waste receptacles contained an average of 20 per cent recyclable waste at the last audit
the goals for reduction of reducing toxic materials and hazardous waste by 10% have not been met; usage has remained static over the period.
a) what do you think are the two main factors that contribute to the barriers in implementing the new initiative
b) what strategies would you employ to respond to these barriers
c) what communications would you use to support the actions and to promote the policy and its expected outcome to key stakeholders
d) how would you review and modify the policy and its supporting procedures to ensure that improvements are made
Read the case study, and then answer the following questions that follow.
Case study scenario
A large city library is aiming to reduce their energy use by improving the efficiency of their lighting systems. As each of the existing globes in the office and community areas fail, they plan to replace them with energy efficient lighting. They also plan to install movement sensitive lighting in storage and archive areas. They hope to reduce their overall electricity costs by 10 per cent once these initiatives are complete.
The Office Manager is responsible for the overall initiative. The maintenance staff will be used to replace the existing light globes as required, and they have received approval to use the council electrician to install the movement sensitive lighting.
There are 30 staff members at the library and they have hundreds of visitors each day.
The following information will allow the library staff to get started on calculating, tracking, ploting and following up on the improvements that will hopefully be evident from the initiative:
27% of the total energy consumtion in the library comes from lighting. The average annual consumption before the initiative was undertaken for the past five years has been as follows:
2007-2008: 9322.1 kwh
2008-2009: 9800.25 kwh
2009-2010: 9818.65 kwh
2010-2011: 9891.5 kwh
2011-2012: 10347.75 kwh
in order for the library to achive its target of usage reduction by 10 % it must be able to track and follow up to ensure the targets are met.
Questions part 2
1. identify the objectives in relation to sustainability that you think the library should have
2. a. how can continous improvement be applied and implemented to sustainability policy to help achive sustainability objectives? Give 2 expamples of the strategies you could use to promote continous improvement in resource efficiency throughout the life cycle of your sustainability management
b. Explain how a recording system for tracking continuous improvement could be useful. Why would it be important to assign responsabilities for the maintenance of this system?
3. Develop a policy statement for the library that demonstrates their commitment to reducing energy consumption and resources use in general
4. Can you identify any other initiatives that would allow the library to reduce their energy consumption without significant expenditure?
5. Write an implementation plan for the initiatives to reduce energy consumption; including those you identified in question 2. This should include:
key activities
responsibilities
time lines
resources
training

· Consulting with relevant stakeholders

· The communication procedures involved
· How you will promote continuous improvement initiatives
7. write a summary document of your outcomes and how you will provide feedback to key personnel and stakeholders affected by and involved in this project
