Assignment title: Information

Human resource management is concerned with managing the lifeblood of organisations – the people who work together to meet organisational goals. The human resource department is a hub of personal, sensitive and confidential information. Human resource managers are likely the people who know the most about every department – and the people who work within those departments. It is therefore essential that human resource managers model ethical practices and decision-making. By modelling professionalism, social responsibility and ethical behaviour, human resource managers can foster productive and ethical organisational environments.Of course, the ideal situation often does not match reality. Chances are, you have seen multiple news stories about ethical violations within organisations. Perhaps you have even witnessed such a violation first hand. The damage incurred when leaders do not behave ethically is sometimes impossible to overcome. In this Shared Activity, you will discuss issues related to ethics within organisations and how those issues may have been better managed. You will analyse the benefits of ethical behaviour and assess how modelling professionalism, social responsibility and ethical behaviour are essential to organisational operations. To prepare for this Shared Activity: Review the Shen (2011) article. Consider how the implementation of socially responsible human resource management benefits organisations. Think about how this model of human resource management guides decision-making. Think about a real-word example of an ethical issue within an organisation that impacted staff across the organisation. This can be something you read about in the news or something you experienced first-hand. If it is something you experienced first-hand, take care in this activity to protect the identities of the organisation and people involved. Consider the consequences of the breach of ethics. What were the short- and long-term effects? Think about how the ethical issue could have been addressed by strategic human resource management. How could strategic human resource management have prevented this problem and/or mitigated its effect on staff? To complete this Shared Activity: Write a post in which you address the following:o Describe the ethical issue you read about or witnessed.o Explain the consequences, both short- and long-term, of the issue on the organisation and on staff.o Make a recommendation for how the ethical issue could have been prevented and/or its effects mitigated through strategic human resource management.
