Benchmarking process:  Benchmarking of the case organisation can then be undertaken using materials encountered in the module, based around corporate governance theories you are introduced to in week 2 of the module (Chapter 3 of Tricker).  The essence of the work involves you developing your essay around reviewing some of the corporate governance practices of the organisation and evaluating these using relevant corporate governance theories. You should employ whichever theoretical position you feel most appropriately helps you explain what you see happening in the organisation, as communicated in publicly available information.  The sections of the benchmarking process could employ the following types of approach to investigating the issues you choose, involving: o Applying academic and theoretical corporate governance approaches to corporate governance issues as they affect the case organisation, e.g. agency theory, stakeholder theory, stewardship theory, and variations thereof, amongst others.  Useful resources: textbooks, lecture notes, and the USearch facility and ABI Database on the library; o Matching the governance claims of the companies with their actions in practice, using good quality media sources to assess the validity of their claims.  Useful media sources can be secured through the Nexis UK database on the University library website. 3. Concluding section: this could bring together the various sources of evidence reviewed in the main piece above, allowing a critical evaluation of issues. Observations could be made on the practices and processes evidenced, with a view to drawing conclusions on the standards of governance encountered. 4. Key issues to be aware of in maximizing your performance in this piece of coursework: consult the Level 6 Assessment Criteria in your module handbook to be updated on how your work will be assessed; the text book introduces the key theoretical ideas for you, but to secure higher marks it will be necessary to use up to date, peer reviewed sources from the library resources mentioned above in supporting your argument; the word limit includes all material in the main body of your essay, but EXCLUDES the list of references and any supporting appendices/annexes.
