Your group is a specialised advising team from the highly successful Human Resource Consultancy Company known as "HP Consulting". You have been hired to produce a report with recommendations and advice to address the HRM problems that the software development firm AutoCad Solutions has been experiencing for the past few years. Whilst their company is quite young, as it was only established in the previous decade, they have already gone through a transition from selling software packages for other companies to developing their own products. AutoCad Solutions is headquartered in Sydney with a customer service branch in New Zealand and has predominately focused on those two markets. In order to increase company growth and reduce exposure to changes in exchange rate they are investigating opening a branch in Hong Kong. Their founder John Lee, who completed an MBA more than a decade ago, has come up with a solution. John Lee stated in the meeting "We can keep our HR unit in Sydney and use virtual teams for providing HR services to our business units in New Zealand and Hong Kong". However the HR director has concerns as she believes this will limit the ability to act strategically in their overseas locations. Their HR Director Jane Eriksson believes that relying on virtual teams is the reason that they have lost some of their best staff members already and will further result in a lack of oversight and control over their operations overseas. As a result you will need to prepare a report that answers the following: 1. What is the role of Human Resource Management (HRM) with modern day organisations? In what ways does HRM benefit modern organisations? (5 Marks) (Better answers will refer to SHRM) 2. Using theoretical frameworks like the ones proposed by Alan Fox outlined in the lecture in week 3, explain to the two executives the different ways in which the employment relationship can be conceptualised. (10 marks)(Better responses will use more academic references to support key points) 3. How do these frameworks influence the strategic choices that the organisations need to make when it comes to managing the workforce (these issues discussed in week 3 + 4)? (10 marks) 4. To conclude the report your group needs to make recommendations to the executives at AutoCad solution for their HR strategy and practices. These recommendations should be supported by the theory and by the answers to the other parts of the assignment (5 marks) You will be writing the report considering that both Mr Lee and Mrs Eriksson will be so you must ensure that you support your arguments are supported with academic articles. Both are very experienced which means journal articles (especially recent articles) are recommended to be used to show the legitimacy your main points. The CEO of HP consulting has highlighted that the board of directors wants the report to be more analytical and well supported rather than just descriptive as it could affect the reputation of the consulting firm otherwise (and your performance bonus). The hard copy of your report is due at the start of your tutorial class in WEEK 10 and it must also be submitted to the TURNITIN submission box on ilearn as well. The similarity report should be attached to the assignment. Keypoints for students: Assignments should use at least 10 sources with a strong preference for refereed journal articles (This is the minimum). For higher grades you can use more journal articles! Turnitin scores more than 20% will be examined very closely. Students are allowed to resubmit their assignment however it can take up to 24 hours for submissions after the first submission. Only one copy of the assignment needs to be submitted per group. The report is done with the same group as the presentation.
