Assignment Questions In July 2014, dressed in a black t-shirt and jeans, Lei Jun, the Chairman and CEO of Xiaomi and a self-professed Steve Jobs acolyte, announces the launch of the Mi4 smartphone and the Mi Band – a health and fitness band selling for the unbelievable price of $13 - to his adoring fans. Lei reflects that the company has come a long way since its start-up in 2010 and as success in China and the region is certain, Lei turns his thoughts to the recent appointment of Hugo Barra from Google who will spearhead the globalisation of the Xiaomi brands. He is considering how successful the Xiaomi Smartphones will be in Vietnam. Using the Xiaomi case study as a basis for your understanding of the company and complementing this understanding with your own further research using the extensive library resources, you are expected to come to a conclusion as to how appropriate the Vietnamese market is for the launch of a Xiaomi Smartphone / a range of Smartphones. You are expected to apply academic theory and models to your discussion and to illustrate your understanding of these models by applying them to the Xiaomi company and analysing your findings. Your evaluation should be structured in two parts to address the following tasks: Part One: 80% Using the information provided in the case study and additional research sources and using relevant models and academic theory to provide structure and substantiation for your views, analyse the suitability of the Vietnamese market for the launch of the Xiaomi smartphone. Your analysis should cover the four sections of the Comrie and Hunt-Fraisse (2015) adaptation of the Walvoord (1980) Potential Market Assessment model. As such, you should divide this section into four parts covering the following: 1. Macro market analysis (Vietnam) 2. Smartphone market analysis (Vietnam) 3. Xiaomi competitive advantage relative to competitors in the Vietnamese mobile and smartphone market – Using Porter's (1985) Value Chain. 4. The fit of the Vietnamese market opportunity with Xiaomi's mission and capabilities. Part Two: 15% Drawing on your analysis in part 1 above, you are expected to conclude as to the attractiveness or not of the Vietnamese market as a potential expansion possibility for Xiaomi Smartphones. Provide a clear rationale for your recommendation and include specific recommendations for any further market research that you may consider to be important for the company to undertake prior to making a final decision regarding possible market entry. The final 5% will be for overall presentation, structure, spelling and grammar.
