Assignment title: Information
ASSIGNMENT BRIEF Students, you should delete this section before submitting your work. This Assignment assesses the following module Learning Outcomes: MODULE LEARNING OUTCOMES ASSESSED: 1) LO1 - demonstrate a detailed understanding of design process. 2) LO2 - define appropriate analytical/modelling tools in order to support the design process. 3) LO3 - identify requirements and develop appropriate solutions within a design. 4) LO5 - select appropriate materials, processes and bought-out components and systems appropriate to automotive or motor-sport design. 5) LO6 - show an ability to work within constraints such as cost, weight and performance. 6) LO7 – demonstrate a detailed understanding for the Design for Assembly and Design for Manufacture principles. Assignment Brief: See below Submission Requirements: Submission both on line and a hard copy of the report with a CD in D110. Typed summary of findings of maximum length 20 pages long (excluding front page and contents page) plus appendices e.g. sketches (although make sure that you include key diagrams and detailed drawings within the main body).Size: Ariel 11 point font with appropriate margins (2 cm and 11⁄2 line spacing). Select a format that best reflects the type of project. Layout Format: Business Style - with contents pages and section headings etc. Submit CD with report "word" document (one file only) and ALL CATIA v5.0 files to tutor or D110 by the date specified below Submit on line assignment report and TURNITIN report (if facility available).- Binding: Use submission folder as per StudyNET submit a CD with report (word document) and any CATIA v5.0 files. CD must be securely attached to the submission folder. Pages exceeding the limit will be discarded. This deferred assignment is worth 100% of the overall in- course assessment for this module. For referrals the mark is capped at P(40) Marks Awarded for: Clarity of report, overall structure and flow, coverage of all key aspects. Novelty and component complexity will contribute to the final mark (detailed marking scheme included in the assignment briefing sheet). Marks will be deducted if the submission does not conform to the guidelines 1. For undergraduate modules, a score above 40% represent a pass performance at honours level. 2. For postgraduate modules, a score of 50% or above represents a pass mark. 3. Modules may have several components of assessment and may require a pass in all elements. For further details, please consult the relevant Module Guide or ask the Module Leader. Typical (hours) required by each students to complete the assignment: is 25 hours Date Work handed out: Feb 2016 Date Work to be handed in: TBA Target Date for the return of the marked assignment: 2 weeks after submission Type of Feedback to be given for this assignment: Individual assignment feedback FileName:VEDandVEReferredAssignmentDoorLatch1516 Page 2 of 4 6AAD0022 AND 6ENT1002 – VED and VE referred Assignment Vehicle Engineering Design Pathway points: V4/VMS4/MENGV4/MENGVMS4 Vehicle Design Pathway points: TMS4/TMV4 ASSIGNMENT BRIEFING SHEET ASSIGNMENT OBJECTIVES Design, Analysis of automotive components You are required to design and develop a standard four door saloon front door Central Door Locking (CDL) latch. Here is your opportunity to apply some of the wide ranging knowledge and skills you have acquired during your degree to find and highlight the links between core knowledge like mechanics, tools like FEA, and the overall design development process. Essentially we want you to: Identify the current legislative requirements for a front door CDL latch. Identify the latch sub-system specifications. Perform 3G calculations (manual or otherwise) to determine the operating forces of the claw / pawl spring(s) for a standard CDL front door latch. Design and model the back-plate and the back-plate housing. Developthedesign/packaginginmoredetailtoincludethepawl,claw,insidehandleandoutside handle levers. Apply DFM and DFA principles to your design, use appropriate sketches and discuss how you would manufacture the back-plate and housing. Evidence of engineering design with production intent and analysis is required here. The conclusion of this assignment should mean that you have demonstrated the application of the design process to one strand of your overall system. Assignment deliverables The two components identified above (back plate and housing) should be developed in detail to include production intent. Fully design and model those components. Refine and produce packaging drawing(s). Follow this up with some appropriate engineering analysis i.e. 3G calculations and at least one other e.g. DFMEA, Mould flow Analysis, FE analysis etc. Describe the appropriate production tools and produce sketches / drawings for such tools. Note the difference between production tools and manufacturing machines. Produce detailed production drawings for the two components identified above. Identify and describe the design for manufacture and design for assembly principles that would be required in order to confirm that this design is capable of doing its job and what manufacturing tools and facilities might be required to produce the chosen components. Produce a synthetic cost analysis for the components identified above. CAD software such as CATIA v5.0 should be used for modelling and detailed drawings of your components. Additional information Your detailed drawings should include production intent and tooling information in such a way that you would be able to production release your parts. Because not all tooling information could be placed on a production drawing, I would expect to see some reference to production tooling information in the written part of your assignment. A few hints on what is expected on the detailed drawings and in the report are listed below: FileName:VEDandVEReferredAssignmentDoorLatch1516 Page 3 of 4 1. Brief discussion of why the specified process is used and how the process works 2. Fully detailed drawings including GD&T, surface finish, thickness etc. (Max A3 size) 3. Show and discuss the results of your analysis. 4. Proposed production volumes and estimated costs. 5. The report should be concise and be presented in a highly professional manner (assume you present it to your MD in industry). If injection moulded tool is used then you should consider the following points: i. Type of tool i.e. open-close tool. ii. Number of cavities. iii. Any inserts and their position. iv. Possible undercuts. v. Draft angles etc. vi. Injection machine pressure capability. vii. Component cost. If a pressed tool is used then you should consider the following points. a) Number of stamping stations. b) Number of piercing operations. c) Sequence of pressing i.e. pressing first, then piercing etc. d) Parts per blow. e) Stamping tonnage. f) Cycle time. g) Component Cost.
