Assignment title: Information
Emily Nguyen is a 75 year old Vietnamese grandmother, admitted to your ward. She speaks English well but culturally she tended towards the Vietnamese traits of being very polite, avoiding talking about her feelings, and being stoic. She underwent a total knee replacement and on the first two days post operatively complained of severe pain and had several episodes of vomiting. She was ordered strong pain relief and was receiving an infusion of morphine. . Nurses had handed over that she seemed to be complaining a lot more than necessary as she was receiving a large dose of morphine in an infusion. The night duty RN on the second night post operatively discovered that the morphine infusion had disconnected and had been infusing into the IV dressing. Emily had effectively suffered two (2) days post operatively with no pain relief.
