Project Description
This project is by design very open-ended. You may need to make several assumptions or develop
your own approach to complete the task.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your team have been commissioned by your local council to undertake a Water Infrastructure
design for the site given below (Figure 1). As the site is slightly far from the existing infrastructure,
the council is exploring an idea of having a completely separate water infrastructure for the
community. In line with its policy of sustainable water usage, the council wants to utilize treated
wastewater to irrigate the Golf course and public parks and, also use for other industries that
demand clean water. Assume your project area anywhere within QLD.
For design purpose assume the population density is any value between 4 - 10 persons/allotment.
This project has four major components.
• Design of Water Treatment Plant
• Design of Water Supply Network
• Design of Wastewater Collection System
• Design of Wastewater Treatment Plant
Flow data of the nearby stream is given below. The stream will be used as a source of water if
feasible.

a) Design of Water Treatment Plant
You are expected to prepare a preliminary layout for the whole plant and conduct hydraulic
design of sedimentation and filtration system only at this stage. You also need to determine the
size of a raw water reservoir on the stream to supply water for the area.
b) Design of Water supply network
Develop a water supply network for the area. Ground elevations at few points are provided.
Lengths of the pipes and point elevations are to be determined from the map.
Use the EPANET program to design your proposed pipe network. http://www2.epa.gov/waterresearch/epanet. Velocities and pressure should be within allowable limits. Use hourly demand
pattern recommended for your area. If the system is not sufficient to be fed by gravity, you
may consider using pumps. Assume pump head characteristic curve (preferably source from
market).
Show pipe types and diameters in your final design. The report should also show pressure at
the nodes, pipe flow velocities, pump types and operation hours in the proposed design.
Note: before using program EPANET read the EPANET User's Manual (PDF).
c) Design of Wastewater Collection system
Design a wastewater collection system. Maintain self-cleansing velocity. Use minimum pipe
diameter of 150 mm (or as available from the market) and round design pipe diameters to the
nearest 5 mm. Maintain minimum cover. Assume suitable pipe material. Suitably place the
manholes and draw the sketch of sewer arrangement along manholes. Try to avoid putting
sewer lift stations as far as possible.
d) Design of Wastewater Treatment Plant
You are expected to prepare a layout for the whole plant and design a primary clarifier (settling
tank) unit and a biological treatment unit.
Submission
A technical report should be submitted at the end of the project.
Task allocation sheet must be included in the report. The report will not be marked without the
task allocation sheet. The sheet will act as a documentation of your exact contribution in the
project so that the report can be used as an evidence of achievements. Sample of the Task
allocation sheet can be found on the course website.
Design drawing should be included as a part of the report.

The main report should show detail explanation of entire process referring sources of formula
or assumptions made. It should also show the calculations in detail.
You may use excel or other computer program to do calculations. However, one complete
sample workout should be included in the report. Excel spreadsheet must be submitted
separately, if used for calculation. The spreadsheet should be self-explanatory with enough
comments so that the marker can understand.
