Assignment title: Information
ME503 Telecommunication System Engineering | Assignment 1 Page 1 of 5
ME503 Telecommunication System Engineering
Release Date: Week 2 (28th July 2016)
Submission Deadline: Week 6 (28th August 2016, 11pm)
Word Limit: Altogether 1200 words (for both Parts A & B)
Total Marks: 100 (Weight of 10% in unit's final grade)
Accepted File Type: Only Microsoft Word
Purpose of the assessment:
The purpose of this assignment is to motivate students to seek to understand the fundamental systems
engineering principles and their applications in telecommunication systems. The assignment has two
parts: Part A and Part B.
Part A: Contribution to unit's forum at Moodle (60 marks)
Every student has to watch all the weekly YouTube videos relating to the topic for the week posted on
the unit's forum at Moodle site. The student has to formulate one technically-interesting question
from the content of the video and post it to the forum for discussions with other students. It is not
allowed to post the same question posted by another student. That would be plagiarism. Also, each
week every student has to respond to at least one question posted by another student. Students are
expected to answer another student's questions so that co-operatively every student understands the
subject matter. A student is expected to post an answer to a question asked if no one was able to
answer it correctly.
Note: each post, either a question or answer, should never be longer than ½ A4 page using 11-point
font size.
Engineering Learning Journal: As part of the submission of the Assignment 1, every student shall
add the question she/he posted and the ones she/he answered in a weekly basis (on Weeks 1 to 5
videos) with the appropriate date and topic as headings. The learning journal has date and activities
performed underneath the date. Below is an example (Note: dates below are only for example.):

Description of the assessment:
1. Background
This assignment seeks to motivate students to apply basic principles in systems engineering. Systems
Engineering is an interdisciplinary approach aiming to enable the realisation of successful complex
systems. It focuses on: defining & scoping customer needs and required functionality early in the
development cycle.
2. Requirements
The requirements are found in the marking criteria table below.
3. Submission Guidelines:
MIT General Guidelines for Presentation of Academic Work is used in this assignment. Students are
expected to know and adhere to it.
The assignment must be submitted in soft (electronic) as .doc file on Moodle page provided at MIT
intranet. The page numbers of the assignment must be clear on each page.
Marking criteria:
Marks are allocated as follows:
Section to be included in
the report

PART B (40 marks):
Question 1: Reliability of a Parallel System
Consider the system shown in Figure 1, which is a model of an active redundant generators at a main
exchange of Telecommunication Company.
(a) Assume that the reliability of each
subsystem (or component) i has
the reliability of Ri. Calculate the reliability of the overall system RS as a function of Ri.

(b) If the reliability of component i at time t is Ri(t)=e-it, what is the reliability function of the
overall system at time t?
(c) Evaluate the mean time to failure (MTTF) of the overall system as a function of i using the
reliability function in part (b).
(d) Prove using the information above that the failure rate of the overall system with exponential
reliability is

Question 2
A point-to-point digital microwave radio system is required by a bank to link the LANs of two of its
branches at 2.048 Mbps transmission speed. The handbook delivered by the manufacturer has
dimensioned the entire radio terminal with the reliability:
MTBF (mean time between failures): 100,000 hours
MTTR (mean time to repair): 2 hours (equipment only)
The radio path availability was calculated for =10-8 and found to be 99.999% for the average
worst case. The system configuration is shown in Figure 1.
a. Calculate the overall system availability
b. Draw the reliability diagram of the system
c. How would you increase the availability of the system required by the bank?
d. The useful life of the equipment shown in Figure 2 is 15 years. Calculate the reliability of the one
radio terminal at the end of it life?

Question 3
Access to the Internet has arguably become an essential service. However, the quality of the service
varies widely in Australia. Multiple governments had promised (and begun to deliver) a high-speed
connectivity throughout Australia via the NBN. Discuss and briefly explain the NBN technology. The
discussion must be based on research findings, e.g. reference must be made of at least two journals.
(10 marks)
Question 4
The functions of a telecommunication network, whether it is wired or wireless, are specified by the
size of its coverage area and traffic carrying capacity. On the other hand, the performance of the
network is specified by its quality of service.
a) What limits the size of the coverage area of a telephone exchange in the?
b) What limits the traffic carrying capacity of a telephone exchange?
