Assignment title: Information

The cut-off date for this assignment is 21 Aug 2016, 2359hrs. This is a group-based assignment. You should form a group of 3 members from your seminar group. Each group is required to upload a single report to Blackboard via your respective seminar group. Please elect a group leader. The responsibility of the group leader is to upload the report on behalf of the group. It is important for each group member to contribute substantially to the final submitted work. All group members are equally responsible for the entire submitted assignment. If you feel that the work distribution is inequitable to either yourself or your group mates, please highlight this to your instructor as soon as possible. Your instructor will then investigate and decide on any action that needs to be taken. It is not necessary for all group members to be awarded the same mark. ___________________________________________________________________________ The Objective of this GBA (a) To provide an opportunity for the students to apply the materials learnt in the course and to develop/sharpen the necessary technical skills and knowledge on project management. However, profit has been BUS353e Assignment 2 SIM UNIVERSITY Assignment 2 – Page 3 of 7 declining due to uncertain economy outlook and increased competition, e.g. from the Resort World Sentosa, Lego Land in Malaysia and soon the Disneyland in Shanghai. SWL is planning for next year's growth and operations. The management is considering the following potential projects: i. Project A: Add a Dolphin Pool with a marine animal show. ii. Project B: Replace the Merry-go-round's old motor and worn wooden horses. iii. Project C: Improve structure of the Sky Rock Roller Coaster to meet the new safety standards required by the Government's Safety Regulation Board (SRB). iv. Project D: Launch The Adventure of Jungle Boy Ride (AJBR) which is the first kind in Asia that integrates virtual reality and theme ride system. v. Project E: Expand the cafeteria to accommodate larger crowd during peak hours. vi. Project F: Acquire ISO 9000 Quality Certification. Question 1 (a) Classify each project into Compliance, Strategic or Operational category. You must explain the reason for each classification by envisaging what the project can do for SWL. (12 marks) (b) SWL wants to use a number of criteria to rank the projects. The management feels that Profitability, Attractiveness to Customers, and Corporate Image are important criteria. The Finance Department estimated that, after deducting expenses, the Net Present Values (NPV) for Project A to F are $1.8M, $0.5M, $1M, $1.5M, $0.2M, $0.3M respectively. Use the multi-weight scoring model method with scale of 1 to 5 (1 as least favourable; 5 as most favourable) for both weightages of criteria and ratings of projects for the criteria. Explain and evaluate the total weighted score for each project and determine the highest ranked project. Present your answer in the form of Table 1. You have to justify the choice of the two most important criteria, and the highest rated project for each criterion. For criterion on ____________, Project __ is rated the highest because ______________. (Do this for all three criteria) Overall, the highest ranked is Project __. Note: Your answer need not be the same as the project decided by SWL in Question 2. (10 marks) Section 2: Understanding Project Management Structure and Leading the Project Due to increased competition, there is an impetus for SWL to add more innovative and stateof-art entertainment. It has partnered with the local research institute, Virtual Lab, to explore the integration of Virtual Reality (VR) technology with theme ride. The research institute collaborated with SWL on using the theme from one of the Wonder Group's most popular animation movies, "Jungle Boy". The visitors will be wearing VR gadgets, immerge in the imaginary realism of being in the Borneo Rainforest, whilst riding a dragon to fight the invading devils. The integrated system will use the 3D imaging technology from Virtual Lab, and the most modern ride, which can spin in 360 degrees, supplied by Tron AG from Germany. This will be the first such ride in Asia. SWL's management is excited about the ride's potential and has decided to proceed with this project. It is called the "Adventure of Jungle Boy Ride" (AJBR) Project. Tron AG has been a regular ride contractor and supplier to the Wonder Group. They are very enthusiastic to be involved in this project. The CEO, Jack Ng, has assigned the following SWL staff to form a project team: 1. Yourself, a Finance Manager who is appointed as the Project Manager due to your leadership quality. Besides project management and conducting coordination meetings, you are also responsible for liaising with government agencies, and items that do not fall under the domains of other team members. 2. Mr. Hashim, Senior Engineer from Ride Operations: He has deep knowledge in theme ride technology and operations. He is in charge of ride system related items such as installation, testing, training, etc. 3. Ms. Jane Tan: a Marketing Manager: She is in charge of the promotion of AJBR. As a member of a lean team, she also takes on the task of purchasing project items. The ride system which cost 500 thousand Euro, is quoted and has to be paid in Euro. (8 marks) (c) As the Project Manager, you must do a preliminary project analysis. Identify four (4) major external stakeholders in this project (i.e. do not cite SWL management, staff and project team). For each stakeholder, describe the nature of AJBR's dependency on this stakeholder for the project to be successful, and discuss what the project team shall do to cater to the dependency. The CEO wants the AJBR Project to start on 1st August 2016, and the ride to be launched by 1st December 2016 so as to attract more year-end holiday's visitors. 2. The project is to be carried out on weekdays which do not include non-public holidays. The public holidays (PHs) which may fall during the project period and to be marked as Non-Working Day are: National Day on 9 Aug, Hari Raya Haji on 12 Sep, Deepavali on 29 Oct, and Christmas on 25 Dec. If a Public Holiday falls on Sunday, the next day (Monday) will have a leave-in-lieu. No leave-in-lieu for Public Holidays on Saturday. 3. The table shows activities before grouping according to Work Breakdown Structure (WBS). 4. As all three project members (including yourself) are senior staff, you have subordinates/contractors to carry out the work. Hence a project member can be working on multiple tasks simultaneously. There is no need to resolve role resource conflicts. You are not required to fill in the Resource Names in MS Project. Question 3 To execute the project efficiently, you are required to: (a) Design a three-level Work Breakdown Structure (WBS). Level 1 is the overall AJBR Project (Item 1 in Table 2). There shall be three (3) Level 2 activities: i. Administration & Coordination, ii. Marketing & Purchasing, iii. Ride Installation & Training. You have to decide which Level 3 activities (Item 2 to 16) to put under them. Each project member will be in charge of a level 2 activity. All partners and contractors are to report to SWL staff. (8 marks) (b) Create a Gantt Chart in MS Project for the AJBR Project based on the WBS (refer to Textbook Chapter 4, Pg 115, Exhibit 4.1 for a similar format). Row 1 shall be "Adventure of the Jungle Boy Ride Project". You must show the Task Name, Duration, Start Date, Finish Date and Predecessor columns on the left of the Gantt Chart. Critical path activities shall be shown in red colour. Note: In MS Project, you may use block "Indent" to group the sub-activities under the same higher level activity. You have to show the Gantt Chart on the report instead of referring the marker to an embedded file. You may do a screen capture of the MS Project view with necessary cropping. Any Non MS Project format presented will results in mark reduction. (6 marks) (c) From the Gantt Chart, determine the project duration and completion date. Comment on the schedule.
