Concrete Design ENG466 Assignment 1 YR16 Due date: Friday 2 SEPT 2016 Q1. Design a simply supported beam of 6.5m span as a singly reinforced beam to resist a ultimate bending moment of 38 kNm. Given: f'c = 32 mpa, fsy = 500 MPa. Maximum aggregate size = 20mm. Stirups are made of R10 bars. Exposure classification A2 applies. State all assumptions made. Provide a sketch showing arrangement of the bars. Q2. A rectangular doubly reinforced beam of total depth of 500mm has two number N24 bars at the top and four number N24 at the bottom. Width of the beam is 200mm. Cover at both end is 88mm. Evaluate the Ultimate moment strength of the beam MU. Q3. Width of the flange of a T-beam is 1650mm and that of web is 450mm. Thickness of flange is 100mm. Take the distance from the top of the flange to the centre of the bottom layer as 1200mm. The beam is to resist a moment M* = 3700 kNm. Assume f'c = 20MPa and an A1 classification. Calculate the amount of reinforcement steel needed and sketch the details. Use N32 bars. Q4. A simply supported rectangular beam, 340 mm wide and 630 mm deep (with d = 568), is part of a floor system that supports the storage area. The steel ratios pt = 0.008 and pc = 0.0025; ES = 200 000 MPa and f'c = 32 MPa. For g = 8Kn/m including self weight and q = 8 KN/m, what is the maximum effective span beyond which the beam is not considered by AS3600 as complying with the serviceability requirement for deflection.
