Faculty of Engineering and IT School of Systems, Management and Leadership Assignment 1 – Report on Literature Review (Individual assignment) Spring, 2016 32531 – Global Information Systems Due: 3pm, 7 September 2016 Worth: 50% This assessment addresses objectives 1-6. This assessment contributes to the following Graduate Attributes: A.1, A.3, A.5, B.4, B.6,C.2, E.1, F.3 and F.4. Assignment Objective: To gain a deeper understanding of Global Information System issues, both theoretically and practically through a critical examination of existing literature published in books, refereed journals, conference proceedings, etc and producing a Report. You will investigate any one of the following topics: 1. Impact and opportunities of IT in global economic context 2. Cloud computing and Security issues 3. Disruptive IT innovations 4. Outsourced Projects with globally dispersed teams 5. Security and legal issues in Global Business. 6. Any other topic of interest relating to GIS (You will have to get the approval from the Lecturer) Note: In selecting the topic, it should be:  of direct interest to you  of value to your professional development and  consistent with your professional career goals. The Literature Review will be not more than 3000 words. The review will involve a critical analysis of existing literature, a minimum of 20 academic texts drawn from a broad range of information systems literature published after 2012. The types of articles that are appropriate for referencing include published books, refereed journals and refereed conference proceedings. You will have to coherently synthesize the literature and make appropriate selection of ideas and facts. Refer to the Marking Criteria for more information on the research question(s), appropriateness and quality of the chosen texts etc. What to Do: Broadly the Literature Review should be structured in the following way:  Organisation of the Report  Complete and succinct abstract  Introduction - explaining the research problem, research question, scope and limitations  Literature Review  Conclusion  References  Appendices (if any) Note: The word count does not include the title, contents page, references and Appendices. All other typed text will be considered to fall within the 3000 words. Submission: Both Hard and Soft copies of the report are required. Assessment: The report will be assessed according to the Marking guidelines given below. Submission: Assignments are due on the due date indicated above. The hard copy is to be submitted to the Lecturer and the soft copy sent to the Lecturer's email address. A late penalty of 10% of the subject weighting for the assignment will be applied each day to work that is submitted late, unless prior arrangements have been made with the Subject Coordinator. Assignments will be returned during your lecture/tutorial in Week 8. Academic Misconduct: Refer to the Subject Outline under "Academic Standards". Literature Review: Marking Sheet Criteria Marks ORGANISATION (2 marks) • Self-explanatory Title • Table of Contents with clear section and subsection titles and page numbers ABSTRACT (5 Marks) • Complete and succinct abstract which briefly introduces the topic, identifies the research question(s), states the significance of the research and summarizes the findings of the literature review INTRODUCTION (4 Marks) • Clear statement of the research problem and the context of research • The research question(s) • Importance and relevance of the research study • Scope and Limitations • Brief overview of the organization of the report LITERATURE REVIEW (30 Marks) • Ability to coherently synthesize and critically analyse the existing literature, using at least 20 academic texts and make appropriate selections of ideas and facts. Has the student synthesized information critically or merely summarized the articles? • Clear statement of the research question(s) through identification of gaps in the literature • Logical progression of ideas through the Literature Review • Quality of the chosen texts • Appropriateness of the chosen texts to the topic being researched and completeness of the texts as a whole for covering the topic. • Correct citations using UTS Harvard format CONCLUSION (6 Marks) • Clear summary of key points of the Literature Review • Implications of Literature Review for future research COMPLETE, CORRECT AND CONSISTENT REFERENCING (3 Marks) • Reference List in correct UTS Harvard style TOTAL MARKS (maximum 50)
