Assignment title: Information
Details of task: Choose a 'developing' (ex-colony or former Soviet Bloc) country. Students prepare two annotated bibliographies of literature (books, journal articles, possibly supplemented by limited amounts of 'grey' literature) relating to the social and economic development of their chosen country: A. The pre-colonial, colonial and early nation-building history of the country, and how this has shaped subsequent development trajectories, achievements and failures. B. 'Formal' (post-colonial) economic and social development policies, plans, programs and projects, from the dawn of the 'development era' up to the present time. Each annotated bibliography should cover 4 to 6 written works, and should summarise the authors' presentation and analysis of the topic. Summaries should be brief – 100 to 250 words for each entry. They can be presented either as prose (paragraphs) or as dot-points. The bibliographies should begin with a short introduction and context section, followed by the summaries of each of the selected readings – including bibliographic information then a short prose or dot-point summation of the main thesis and arguments – followed by a brief discussion and summary section drawing conclusions from the combined readings.
