CUC100 Assessment 3: PowerPoint Presentation
Page 1 of 2
Task:
This assessment requires you to orally and visually present a plan of your final essay in the
form of a PowerPoint or Prezi.
Your 9 slides should include the following:
• Slide 1: Provide your name and an orientation (background) to your chosen scenario;
• Slide 2: Provide a relevant definition of sustainability that reflects the issues and potential
solutions of your chosen scenario;
• Slide 3: Provide your thesis statement (overall argument) in one or two sentences;
• Slide 4: Include a graphic (visual) representation of your essay plan This can be either a
taxonomy or visual outline providing it is clear and accurate;
• Slides 5, 6 & 7: Explain the sustainability issues related to your chosen scenario from an
environmental, social and economic point of view and briefly indicate potential solutions
that could be argued for. Allow one slide per pillar and take the issues and solutions
directly from your taxonomy or visual outline of the essay;
• Slide 8: In formal bibliographic style, list the most relevant publications that you have
found. Explain why and how they relate to each pillar and/or your thesis statement;
• Slide 9: Conclude your presentation by reflecting on the progress of your essay so far.
This slide may also indicate any questions you are still considering or further research
that you still need to do.
NB: This is not a final plan so we don't expect you to have covered everything you will discuss
in your final essay, but we do expect you to have clearly started thinking about the different
aspects of the possible topics and sub-topics in your essay.
INTERNAL STUDENTS: Orally present your PowerPoint Essay Plan in class, Week 9.
EXTERNAL STUDENTS: Record your voice (as though presenting to an audience) and embed
the audio within your PowerPoint.
ALL STUDENTS: Provide a written version of your script (of your spoken presentation) as part

on YouTube or going to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahATyKyfRdk
Points to consider for Assessment 3:
Read the task description carefully, and make sure that you include all the information
required;
Select a design template to ensure that your slides appear consistent in look and feel;
Talk/present to an audience. This means:
o Being engaging – varying your tone, using body language (internal students) and
adding emphasis to certain words;
o Making your slides readable and attractive from a distance;
o Keeping your slides uncluttered – using bullet points rather than full sentences;
o Speaking appropriately for an academic environment and considering word choice
Below is one example of an essay plan (slide 4) relating to particular issues of sustainability.
You will need to choose a scenario from the list provided for Assessment 4 and present
your plan like either example below or alternatively as a hierarchy of
points/arguments/ideas down the page (using headings and sub-headings); a flowchart or
a concept map.
