Individual Assignment B (Extended Essay Question)
Sir Charles Haddon-Cave presented a review of the UK MAA airworthiness system in his
investigation into the RAF Nimrod XV230 loss and fatalities in Afghanistan. One of his
statements within the report is:
"Most aviation organizations worth their salt espouse safety and airworthiness as their
'highest priority' and enunciate 'principles' to which they profess adherence. Translating
these laudable aspirations into a practical reality, however, is easier said than done".
He has offered four new principles as a foundation for a new airworthiness system:
(i) leadership,
(ii) independence,
(iii) people (not just process and paper),
(iv) simplicity.
Choose one of these four new principles, then detail and quantify its importance to
maintaining safety and airworthiness.

(20 marks).

argument. The use of headings and sub-headings is expected, and the
appropriate use of the Harvard Reference style. (60 marks).
Your conclusions should quantify to what extent the objectives have been met.
Has the research problem been "solved"? To what extent have the objectives
been achieved? What has been learned from the results? How can this
knowledge be used? What are the shortcomings of the research or the
research methodology? (20 marks).
*Penalties will apply to reports that exceed the maximum word count. Every 100 words
beyond the stated limit of 2,500 words will incur a penalty of 5%. So, if you submit a
report with 2,712 words, a penalty of 10% will apply before marking begins, meaning a
perfect effort would score you a maximum mark of 90%.
