ASSIGNMENT
Introduction and background notes (vocational context)
You are working as an epidemiologist for Public Health England (PHE) and you are charged with
the responsibility of producing a report on the epidemiology (i.e. the distribution and determinants of
different diseases) in the United Kingdom (UK) and controlling them. Your boss has asked you to
compile a report on diseases in the UK and provide detailed plans on how the diseases would be
controlled. When compiling your report, you are expected to work with government and nongovernment agencies involved in measuring occurrence of and controlling diseases either locally,
nationally in the UK or world over.
In this case you should address the following:
1. Examine the various approaches and strategies used by different agencies identifying the
levels of health and the incidence/prevalence of disease in communities.
2. Give the distribution of different diseases using statistics and epidemiology.
3. Describe a plan on how the diseases which, from your report have the highest occurrences
are going to be controlled.P a g e 3 | 8
Department of Health and Social Care
Task 1:LO1: Understand different approaches and strategies used to measure, monitor and control
the incidence of disease in communities
(Recommended word up to 1300)
As an Epidemiologist working for Public Health England please do the following:
1. Using specific examples, explain the roles of different agencies in identifying levels of health
and disease in communities. [P1.1]
2. Based on searches from credible sources (books, Journals, internet), produce a fact sheet that
explain, using statistical data, the epidemiology (incidence and spread) of one infectious and
one non-infectious disease that is widespread in their own country. Your answer must also
include a brief outline of the relevance of statistic in the context of public health. [P1.2, M1]
3. Evaluate the effectiveness of different approaches and strategies to control the incidence of
disease in communities. [P1.3, D3]
To achieve M1, complex problems of the epidemiology of more than one variable such as one
infectious disease and one non-infectious disease has been used supporting your answers
with statistics
To achieve D3, convergent and lateral thinking have been used when evaluating the different
different approaches and strategies to control the incidence of disease in communities.
Task 2: L02 Be able to investigate the implications of illness and disease in communities for the
provision of health and social care services
(Recommended word up to 1000 words)
As a member of the local Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) responsible for the overall health
and well-being in your local area, you are invited to write a report that will examine what primary
prevention, treatment, palliative and remedial care services have to be prioritised in your local area.
Discuss the services (facilities, expertise, and partnership, funding, individual vs. public good) which
will be required to care for individuals living with those illnesses.
1. Use relevant research to determine what are the current priorities and approaches to the
provision of services for people with disease or illness. [P2.1]
2. Explain the relationship between the prevalence of disease and requirements of services to
support individuals within the health and social care service provision. [P2.2, D2]
3. Analyse the impact of current lifestyle choices on future needs for health and social care
services. [P2.3]
To achieve D2, substantial investigations have been planned, managed and organised when
explaining relationships such as planning, facilities, expertise, partnership work to show how the
occurrence of a specific disease and what are the requirements of health and social care
services to support individuals based on that specific illness.P a g e 4 | 8

Task 3: L03 Understand the factors influencing the health and wellbeing of individuals in health and
social care settings
(Recommended word up to 1000 words)
Produce a report [3.2; 3.3; 3.4] and a fact sheet [3.1] on the factors which influence the health and
well-being of the service users and assess strategies being employed to control specific disease
which are highly prevalent in your area.
1. Produce a fact sheet in which you will address AC 3.1: Based on a proper consideration of the
wider determinants of health, assess the health and wellbeing priorities for individuals in a
particular health or social care setting. [P3.1, M2]
2. Evaluate the effectiveness of strategies, systems and policies in a health or social care setting.
[P3.2, M3]
3. Discuss changes that could be made to improve the health and wellbeing of individuals in a
health and social care setting. [P3.3]
4. Evaluate any activity that has been implemented to encourage behavior change for maximizing
health for individuals in a health or social care setting.[P3.4, D1]
To achieve M2, Complex information/data has been synthesised and processed when
assessing the health and wellbeing priorities such as safety and security, mobility, diet,
hygiene, social and psychological needs for the service user in a specific health or social care
setting.
To achieve M3 , coherent, logical development of concepts for the intended audience have been
applied when evaluating the effectiveness of organisation of service provision, quality of
provision , choices, complaints policies, partnerships in health and social care setting.
To achieve D1, conclusions have been arrived at through synthesis of ideas and have been
justified by giving and evaluating an example of an activity that has been implemented by
government or local authority to encourage behaviour change for maximizing health for
individuals in a health and social care setting.P a g e 5 | 8

9. Glossary
Analyse: Break an issue into its constituent parts. Look in depth at each part using
supporting arguments and evidence for and against the arguments as well as how these
interrelate to one another.
Critically evaluate/analyse: Give your verdict as to what extent a statement or
findings within a piece of research are true, or to what extent you agree with them. Provide
evidence taken from a wide range of sources which both agree with and contradict an
argument. Come to a final conclusion, basing your decision on what you judge to be the
most important factors and justify how you have made your choice.
Explain: Clarify a topic by giving a detailed account as to how and why it occurs, or
what is meant by the use of this term in a particular context. Your writing should have clarity
so that complex procedures or sequences of events can be understood defining key terms
where appropriate, and is substantiated with relevant research.
Assess: Weight up to what extent something is true. Persuade the reader of your
argument by citing relevant research but also remember to point out any flaws and counterarguments as well. Conclude by stating clearly how far you are in agreement with the
original proposition.
Discuss: Essentially this is written debate when you are using your skill at
reasoning, backed up by carefully selected evidence to make a case for and against anP a g e 8 | 8

arrive at a conclusion.
