ASSIGNMENT
Introduction and background notes (vocational context)
As a health worker and social care practitioner you have developed a thorough understanding of the
values and principles that underpin the practice of all those who work in health and social care. This
includes the theories and policies that underpin health and social care practice and explore formal
and informal mechanisms required to promote good practice by individuals in the workplace,
including strategies that can influence the performance of others.
Task 1: LO1
Understand how principles of support are implemented in health and social care practice
(Link to Unit 4)
What you must do
(Recommended 1000 word)
Scenario
Angela has been working with Ahmed and Sylvia for several years that are both 70 years old and
their children live in another country. Ahmed has Alzheimer's disease (a degenerative form of
dementia) and has become increasingly violent towards Sylvia. Sylvia has a hearing impairment and
can only communicate by using sign language. Ahmed has also lost the ability to distinguish
between night and day and spends most nights awake and walking around the house. Angela, the
care worker, has noticed that caring for Ahmed is increasingly exhausting for Sylvia, who is
Ahmed's informal carer.
Prior to his dementia both Ahmed and Sylvia discussed that they never want to live in a care home
and would rather be cared for at home. Angela discusses the present situation with her line
manager and both Ahmed and Sylvia's children. They then decide to amend Ahmed's support plan
and recommend that Ahmed be moved to a care home to give Sylvia a break from her caring role.
Sylvia is very upset when told of this and feels that she has not been consulted. She feels that she
can no longer trust Angela and her children and believes that they are undermining her role inICON College of Technology and Management

caring for Ahmed. Sylvia strongly objects to this recommendation and continues to care for Ahmed
at home.
Using the case scenario above apply your answers to the following in a report. The first
section of your report you must explain with examples how principles of support are applied to
guarantee that Ahmed and Sylvia are cared for in Health and Social Care practice. In your answers,
you could use examples such as dignity, choice, respecting diversity, privacy, independence etc. In
addition you can use examples from the knowledge and experience gained from your workplace
practice in Unit 4 (Personal and Professional Development in HSC) to support your answer to the
question. [P1.1]
In the second section of your report you must outline what are the procedures for protecting
clients, patients and colleagues such as Ahmed and Sylvia from harm. For example in your outline
you could focus on confidentiality, policies about sharing information etc. Again use examples from
knowledge and experience acquired from Unit 4 (Personal and Professional Development in
HSC) workplace practice to support your answer. [P1.2, M2]
In the third section of your report, you should analyse the advantage of using a person centred
approach with users such as Ahmed and Sylvia of health and social care services. [P1.2, M1]
Give some examples to buttress your understanding of how you used person centred approach with
service users in health and social care using knowledge and experience acquired from Unit 4
(Personal and Professional Development in HSC) workplace practice in health and social care:
You could include in your analysis why it is important to support the preferences of the service users
such as Ahmed and Sylvia; why is it important to support service users' rights and maintain their
dignity and why is it important to support others to make informed choices about the services they
need. [P1.3]
In the final section of your report, explain ethical dilemmas and conflicts involved in the case
scenario, examples that may arise when providing care, support and protection to users of health
and social care. For example, you could incorporate into your discussion concepts such as
protection from risk of harm; rights of individuals to take risks etc. Your answers should also reflect
an ethical dilemma you have experienced when delivering care and how those were resolved. This
is linked to your workplace practice experience. [P1.4]
To achieve M1, judgements have been made about what makes person centered approach effective in
the case scenario and give examples from your own health workplace setting.
To achieve M2, complex information using confidentiality has been synthesised and processed to outline
the procedure for protecting clients, patients, and colleagues from harm.ICON College of Technology and Management

Task 2: LO2 Understand the impact of policy, legislation, regulation, codes of practice and
standards on organisation policy and practice
What you must do
(Recommended 700 words)
Scenario
Rachel is worried about her mother because previously care workers abused her. When Rachel's
mum became ill, it became clear she was struggling to live on her own. While also looking after her
young son and her parents – in – law, Rachel began the search for a suitable care home that would
provide care and also alleviate her concerns about safeguarding her mum from abuse. Since her
mum was paying for her own care, Rachel thought it would be easy to find the right care home.
However, the reality of finding the appropriate care home for her mother was anything but.
In the first section of the information pack report you must explain the implementation of policies
e.g. confidentiality, safeguarding, Every Child Matters) legislations (e.g. Care Act 2014) regulations
by Care Quality Commission (CQC codes) and codes of practice i.e. Nursing and Midwifery Council
(NMC) that are relevant to Rachel finding a care home for her mother and also to your own work in
health and social care to support your answer. [P2.1]
In the second section, you must explain how local policies and procedures can be developed in
accordance with national and policy requirements. Relate your answers to the brief scenario and
also to your own workplace setting. [P2.2, D2]
Finally you must evaluate the impact of policy, legislation, regulation and Codes of Practice on
organisational policy and practice with respect to Rachel and her mother. Relate your answers also
to your own workplace setting [P2.3]
To achieve, D2, substantial activities or investigations have been organised using your own relevant
health and social care experience to clarify how local guidelines at your care setting and procedures at
your care setting such as changes to practice and developmental needs can be established in accordance
with national and policy requirements such as the Care Standards Act 2000.ICON College of Technology and Management

e.g. poverty, unemployment, social exclusion, marginalisation etc in health and social care in a
diverse society. How does these social processes combine to shape the life of an individual [P3.2,
M3]
Finally, in your research paper, evaluate the effectiveness of inter professional working. You are
expected to give examples from experiences from own workplace to show the effectiveness of inter

9. Glossary
Explain: Clarify a topic by giving a detailed account as to how and why it occurs, or what is
meant by the use of this term in a particular context. Your writing should have clarity so that
complex procedures or sequences of events can be understood; defining key terms where
appropriate, and is substantiated with relevant research.
Assess: Weigh up to what extent something is true. Persuade the reader of your argument by
citing relevant research but also remember to point out any flaws and counter arguments as
well. Conclude by stating clearly how far you are in agreement with the original proposition
Discuss: Essentially this is a written debate where you are using your skill at reasoning, backed
up by carefully selected evidence to make a case for and against an argument, or point out the
advantages and disadvantages of a given context. Remember to arrive at a conclusion.
Analyse: Break an issue into its constituent parts. Look in depth at each part using supporting
arguments and evidence for and against as well as how these interrelate to one another.
Plan: A proposed or intended course of action
Evaluate - when you evaluate you judge or determine the significance, worth, or quality of
something; assess
Recommend - when you recommend you are suggesting something would be good or
suitable for a particular job or purpose, or to suggest that a particular action should be done
