Assignment title: Information
Assignment 14
Paper
Assignment Instructions Bullet Version: Research and write a paper that focuses on all the Cardinal Elements.
• The industrial front-line supervisor.
• The law (especially those applicable to the industrial workplace and that the industrial supervisor must deal with).
• Managerial practice and principles which the industrial supervisor must use.
• Ethical principles and behaviors related to the above.
• The relationship of the preceding and their integration.
Elaboration of Instructions
Procedure. Note that there are more steps to the paper than merely submitting the paper. See the schedule for the deadline to do the following.
• Approval by instructor of the topic. If at all possible, call the instructor to discuss the topic.
• Draft of paper submitted to Turnitin. Draft means that you think it is finished but the instructor is giving it a quick look over to give you formative feedback about obvious problems, e.g., you are not covering the cardinal elements, don't have a focus, or are using APA.
• Final version of paper submitted to Turnitin and to the Discussion Board.
Focus. In addition to the Cardinal Elements, the paper is to have a topical focus. You could select a topic already covered in the course or another law, regulation, code, legal principle, or other topic closely related to this course that was not the focus of one of the assignments. This law or other closely related topic should (a) be applicable to the technical workplace and (b) the front-line supervisor. If the law or other topic isn't directly focused on the technical workplace, you must discuss how it sometimes is (otherwise you should not have chosen that law or topic). For example, if you select assault and battery, you could discuss workplace violence, company policies and practices about this, and the supervisor's role. Regardless of the law or topic, you have to discuss what it has to do with the technical workplace and the front-line supervisor. There is a list in this document of topic examples.
Format. The formatting style is to be APA 6th Ed. Depending on the content of your paper, it may or may not be best to use the traditional 5-chapter thesis model. Regardless of the model, you must use appropriate headings (at least two levels of headings) and in general include many or all of the same elements of the 5-chapter model (though, maybe with a different arrangement or labeling of those elements). The traditional 5 chapters are introduction, review of literature, methods, results, and conclusion (includes interpretation and recommendations).
Evaluation Criteria/Rubric. The following table contains the criteria by which your report will be evaluated. You can use it as a checklist to make sure you have included everything.

Management and Ethics Concepts and Theories
Make sure you focus on the applicability to the law and front-line supervisors/managers and the other cardinal elements.
• Equal vs equitable. Does equal = fair? When do you treat people the same (equal) and when do you treat them fairly (equitable)? Should every person wear the same size (equal) shoe, have the same eye wear prescription? That might not be fair. Should everyone be evaluated by the same criteria for doing the same job? That might be fair. Should everyone in a certain job try to achieve the same results? Maybe. Should they all achieve those results the same way? Maybe not.
• Maslow's hierarchy of needs
• McGregor's theory of motivation
• Herzberg's motivator-hygiene theory
• Other theories of motivation., e.g., Alderfer's ERG theory, McClelland's learned needs or three-needs theory, expectancy theory, equity theory, goal-setting theory, and reinforcement theory. See sites such as http://www.referenceforbusiness.com/management/Mar-No/Motivation-and-Motivation-Theory.html for a good start on any of these.
• Leadership theories, e.g., the great man theory, trait theory, behavioral theories, situational theories, and several others all with subcategories. See sites such as http://changingminds.org/disciplines/leadership/theories/leadership_theories.htm for a good start.
• Other supervision and managerial theories and practices.
• Various pertinent psychological principles and effects, e.g., the Hawthorn effect, self-fulfilling prophecies, the horn and halo effect.
• Continuous improvement, TQM, Six Sigma, etc.
• Something related to a Hayden Contention but not already discussed.
• Possibly many more.
