Team Assignment 3 – Multi-Criteria Decision Making
Team Question
This assignment is intended to assist teams in selecting "the best" project from a set of identified
alternative projects for the Global Business project. There are two phases to the assignment, but
only the first phase needs to be submitted for grading. Phase 2 is optional, and does not have
to be submitted. Please also note that this is an academic exercise in support of learning
objectives associated with MBUS 862. Teams are in no way bound to apply the results from this
assignment to their actual selection of a team project.
Phase 1
Your team is required to agree on a set of criteria to be used in evaluating alternatives for the
Global Business Project. A minimum of three criteria are required, there is no upper limit on the
number of criteria. For each criterion identified you must indicate:
a. A written description including why it is relevant,
b. Whether it is qualitative or quantitative,
c. How it will be measured. There will be an approach provided in class for qualitative
criteria but you are welcome to select any means of measurement you deem fit.
Once you have identified a set of criteria, you are to assign criteria weights using the pairwise
comparisons methodology presented as part of the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) in class.
As a team, you can decide if this is done individually and then averaged or if you work towards a
group consensus for each comparison. The actual matrix algebra can be done by hand, in
Microsoft excel or using any software you deem appropriate. You must also calculate the
consistency ratio for the matrix you create (see Chapter 7 of the textbook). If the ratio is greater
than 0.10, you will have to make adjustments.
Phase 1 deliverable:
1. A written submission including the details asked for above including a description of how
your team decided to conduct the pairwise comparisons.
2. An appendix showing the details regarding how the criteria weights were calculated and
the consistency ratio calculation.
3. A list from highest to lowest weighted criteria.
4. A written team-based reflection regarding the effectiveness of the approach.
Phase 2 – Optional.
Use pairwise comparisons to rate each of your identified alternatives for each of the criteria to
determine "the best" overall choice for your team's GBP.
Phase 2 deliverable:
Drop Paul an email and let him know if you actually completed phase 2. If you did, please
include an assessment of the effectiveness of the AHP to this decision. Note that effectivenessMBQC 862 – Business Decision Modelling

here should be interpreted broadly. Specifically, was the exercise as a whole useful to the
selection process? You do not have to select the recommended alternative for the exercise to be
useful!
