Assignment Introduction and background notes (vocational context) Safeguarding vulnerable adults is an incredibly important issue in Health and Social Care. As an employee of Health and Social Care it is essential to have a full understanding on factors of abuse, the types of abuse and people at who are at risk of abuse. It is essential that you also have an understanding on what are the current legislations and working practices that protect people from abuse. You may have a responsibility to contribute to devising strategies to protect vulnerable people from abuse in the respective Health and Social Care organisation. Task 1A: LO1 Understand the factors that contribute to the incidence of abuse and harm to self and others (950 recommended words) Mrs. JK an elderly 71 year old person is living with her son in who is in his 20s. She has multiple physical problems along with high blood pressure, diabetes and suffers from depression. She has been attending a day centre that caters services for people of her similar age group. She made a complaint to the Day Centre manager against her son who she stated physically abused her for money to fulfil his drug needs. Her refusal to give him money resulted in her son beating her and pulling her hair. Since she is on state benefits, her funds are limited and she is often left with no money for food and essentials after her son has taken what he needed to fulfil his drug needs. The Manager quickly informed the Safeguarding section of the borough who then contacted police. The police removed her son from the home and placed him in a restricted drug rehabilitation centre. A couple of days later the mother met the manager again and started crying for her son because she wanted him to return back home. She explained that her son had cried over the telephone the previous night. He wanted to return home and promised that he will not make any trouble in future.P a g e 3 | 7 Department of Health and Social Care What you must do Scenario You are a Care Manager in your organisation. Now you need to write a comprehensive report to the local authority covering the types of abuse, risk factors and a reassurance of how you can ensure the safety of Mrs. JK. 1.1 Explain why particular individual such as Mrs. JK and other groups may be vulnerable to abuse and / or harm to self and others. [P1.3, M1]  To achieve M1, an effective approach to study has been applied giving specific examples of the impact of social and cultural factors on a specific type of abuse. Task 2: LO2 Understand current legislation, policy and professional involvement regarding abuse in health and social care contexts (950 recommended words) In recent years high profile cases were reviewed and criminal trials were concluded. These trials involved Hospital staff who had seriously abused patients who were fully dependent on them as well as mothers involved in the killing of their children despite the involvement of regulatory bodies and several agencies. The first case occurred at Winterbourne Hospital in Gloucestershire. A BBC panorama investigation in 2012 revealed that the service users with learning disabilities and challenging behaviour had suffered physical and psychological abuse by the staff. The second case was the widely publicised scandal that occurred in Stafford Hospital in late 2000. Poor care and high mortality rates alerted a public inquiry into the hospital that revealed examples of serious abuse to the patients by the hospital staff. Finally consider the cases of Daniel Pelka, Keanu Williams and Amanda Hutton who were abused and killed by their mothers. This includes dealing with allegations against people and scrutinising more the recruitment and selection of adults who work with children. There is a responsibility for the agencies, groups and volunteers who are engaged in any work with children and their families, to have policies, systems and processes in place that support these multi-agencies safeguarding arrangements. Preparation guidelines of the Coursework Document a. All coursework must be word processed. b. Document margins must not be more than 2.54 cm (1 inch) or less than 1.9cm (3/4 inch). c. Font size must be within the range of 10 point to 14 point including the headings and body text (preferred font size is 11). d. Standard and commonly used type face such as Arial should be used. e. All figures, graphs and tables must be numbered. f. Material taken from external sources must be properly refereed and cited within the text using Harvard standard g. Do not use Wikipedia as a reference. 4. Plagiarism and Collusion Any act of plagiarism or collusion will be seriously dealt with according to the College regulations. In this context the definition and scope of plagiarism and collusion are presented below: Plagiarism is presenting somebody else's work as your own. It includes copying information directly from the Web or books without referencing the material; submitting joint coursework as an individual effort. Collusion is copying another student's coursework; stealing coursework from another student and submitting it as your own work. Suspected plagiarism or collusion will be investigated and if found to have occurred will be dealt with according to the college procedure.
