Faculty of Health, Arts & Design Higher Education Division DCO10005 Typography Project 4 Twentieth Century Type Week 7–12 Semester 2, 2016DCO10005 Faculty of Health, Arts and Design Typography Swinburne University of Technology 2 PROJECT FOUR – Twentieth Century Type Project weighting 40% of unit DCO10005 This project requires you to design an eight-page information booklet. In class you will be assigned a decade of the 20th Century. You will collect and collate information about typography and design relevant to your decade. You will design an information booklet to clearly convey information to the reader. You will develop a typographic design that incorporates information hierarchy and a grid structure to enable your target audience to navigate the content easily. Booklet will contain multiple levels of type based information, including; headline/titles, subheadings, text, captions and pull quotes. Any one of the segments may become the 'feature' of your information booklet Each segment will have 500-750 words the feature segment will typically be longer. Keep in mind that your aim is to convey information in context so the story you are telling about the time/typography/designer needs to create a flow for the reader. All content sources must be acknowledged and referenced using APA referencing. PRINTED BOOKLET Folded Size A4 (297x210mm) Portrait Pages 8-pages PROJECT REQUIREMENTS • Creative concept with rationale • Investigation and synthesis of subject related content. • Evidence and application of research of the subject matter. • Capacity to create typographic hierarchy and visual structure within a two-dimensional printed communication design context. STUDIO CONSULTATION SESSIONS • Consultation with your tutor and review of working files is critical to learning and success in this project. • Studio consultation sessions provide the opportunity for individual and group formative feedback and appraisal. • These sessions are designed to improve you ability to develop outcomes to a professional standard. • It is expected that you participate in studio sessions by both presenting your work and participating in discussion. • It is your responsibility to be prepared and bring to class the requirements listed above. NB It is expected, time permitting, that project feedback will occur in these sessions. Feedback outside these sessions is strictly at the tutor's discretion. ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS Assessment Requirements are specific outlined in Project 4_Assessment Rubric. The rubric clearly stipulates what you will be assessed on at each stage. Please ensure you read this carefully to maximise your success in this unit.DCO10005 Faculty of Health, Arts and Design Typography Swinburne University of Technology 3 DESIGN PROCESS Stage 1) Research and Content What significant things happened in the typographic/design world in that period? What are the main typographic developments that occurred in your decade? Who were the main designers contributing to the changes/advancement that occurred? What technological changes occurred and how did they impact on typography and production? Consider the main information points What are you aiming to communicate about your decade? Make a list of the key points and create an outline of the story you will tell. This list will help to formulate a page guide. Select the three aspects to work with on in consultation with your tutor. Carefully consider the importance and relationship of the components. Collate text 1000-1500 words. Stage 2) Ideas and conceptual development How will the visual imagery express your story and communicate your interpretation of the decade? Develop mood boards, minimum three, that will demonstrate you visual intentions. Theme development that shows three different conceptual ideas Conceptual development that demonstrates appropriate communication Draw thumbnails to indicate the overall visual idea (A4 sheets x 3). Final idea selection and rationale Stage 1&2 to be completed by Week 9 Stage 3) Grid Design How many columns to you intend to have? What will your margins be, will there be variation between top, bottom, left and right? Draw thumbnails indicating your intention (A4 sheets x 3). Select one and develop this to final size. Stage 4) Typographic Design How many levels of information do you intend to have? Make a list. How will you vary each level to engage the audience in the appropriate sequence? In InDesign create a double page spread using the grid you have decided. Using the same double page spread create six examples that show your typographic design development. Select your preferred design in conjunction with your teacher. Begin setting up your InDesign document. Stage 3&4 to be completed by Week 10 Stage 5) Creating your InDesign document Set up you InDesign file to match your selected design. Use at least one Master Page. Set up paragraph and character style sheets. Stage 5 to be completed by Week 12 Stage 6) Production Source a suitable printer and check your file for accuracy and completeness.
