Assignment title: Information
Students will also be required to complete a briefing paper on their selected topic, to be submitted one week after the presentation of the seminar. Feedback and discussion of the topic during the seminar should be used to help with the writing of the briefing paper. This component of the assessment is to be done individually (even where 2 students present the topic in a seminar). Students will also be expected to compile an annotated bibliography to be submitted with their briefing paper.
Managers in many situations rely on their support staff to research particular subjects and present concise summaries of the relevant issues. This assignment will help with the development of these skills through the production of a briefing paper. The briefing paper should provide a good overview of the key issues associated with the selected topic along with pointers to additional reading that could be helpful if the reader wanted to explore the issues further.
You should prepare this as if you were a middle level manager in an organisation advising an executive level person of the issues associated with the topic.
The pointers to additional reading on the topic should take the form of an annotated bibliography. This means that you should write a paragraph on selected entries in the bibliography focussing on the relevance of the reference to the topic and the quality of the information in the reference. It is expected that there will be a minimum of six entries with annotations in the bibliography. At least three of these annotated entries need to be peer reviewed academic articles. As the currency of source material is relevant to managers, it is also important that at least three of these annotated references are dated from 2015 or later. You should also avoid the temptation to use material directly from any article abstract as the main basis for your annotations in the bibliography, as typically this won't address the key issues of relevance and quality and is likely to cause referencing problems. Note that Google Scholar can be a useful means of locating academic articles and most of these will be accessible if you are in the UC domain (or using the UC VPN server). A simple list of URLs is likely to receive almost no marks for this component and is unlikely to conform with the standards in the citation guide.
It is important that students keep their submissions concise and to the point – the briefing paper should be succinct, with students aiming for around 1500 words or less for the main part of the paper. As a guide, you could keep in mind that you are writing this for a busy manager who is unlikely to read much past a few pages. The bibliography and its annotations are not considered to be part of the 1500 words. Submissions that are too long will be penalised.
Topic
Occupational health and IT
Briefly summarise the main health and safety concerns with the use of information technology. You should include occupational overuse syndrome (OOS), but not limit the summary to this. Are there any particular concerns that IS managers should have about OH&S issues related to IT adoption and use?
Discuss the roles and responsibilities of management, employees, and unions in job design and work organisation as it relates to the implementation of IT related systems. The formal responsibilities of management could be addressed by noting what OH&S legislation applies in the ACT and at the University of Canberra (or a similar local organisation)?
In addressing these issues, you should look at trends around OOS incidents over time, and whether reported incidents have been any different in Australia compared to other places. How much is workplace stress implicated in the problem? You should also use this seminar to get input from others in the class about experiences with OH&S in their workplaces (but it is not necessary to report on this aspect in your briefing paper).
