Assignment title: Information

Interview conducted: October 19, 2016 Thank you for assisting me in this project for school. Please elaborate on the questions below in order for me to use the information in my write-up and presentation. I really appreciate the time that you are taking out of your busy schedules to help me. The questions are… 1. Who are the audiences a person in your chosen field will communicate with? People in other IBM business units - for me, I am in GBS but I spend 50% of my time working with folks in the Watson Health business unit. Or in the newly acquired Truven Health – still a wholly owned subsidiary. My management chain Internal Stakeholders – industry leaders, practice leaders Clients External network – Business partners and people in the market 2. What methods are used to communicate (ie: email, instant messaging, videoconferencing, websites, etc.)? In order of most used: Direct Phone calls, conference calls, email, instant messaging, face-to-face meetings, social media (Twitter, LinkedIn primarily for me) a. Are those methods different when communicating internationally versus domestically? Yes – internal is heaviest on conf calls, email and instant messaging. External would be more face to face, direct phone calls and social media. b. If so, what would that be? Answered above in a. 3. What type of impact have these communication methods had on your field? a. How have they changed? Increase in social media, seeing increase in WebEx and conf calls for external interactions, but has not yet taken over meeting face to face. Internal continues to trend higher and higher on conf calls and email. b. Have those changes been for the better of the career field or to their detriment? Better for the external comments above, not so for internal as the emails have just gotten out of control, hard to keep up and respond to all and there is a ton of emails related to training and other company info pushes that you can barely absorb. Guess I mean there is less and less of direct comms from the hierarchy and company back office – it has been replaced with overnight emails that folks struggle to get to. 4. What are some of the potential communications problems one might encounter in your field? In today's dynamic environment, often you have a very short period of time to communicate very important information. It is critical that you are able to be effective with communication - precision and accuracy, but sharp and to the point. If you miss the mark, you could miss getting very important information to your team, to your management chain, or your client. Any of these could have negative impacts to the business. 5. What makes for effective communication in your field? Planning ahead to get in front of the communication; honesty and transparency 6. Anything else you would like to add regarding communication in the business place? Covered above (I hope! ) Thank you again for your assistance.
