This is a small assignment project that has been developed to introduce you to the use of engineering standards and how they are used in design calculations.
Your task is to design a shaft to meet the requirements set out below. The gears are to be located along the shaft by means of circlips, shaft steps or other positive location methods. The drive to each of the gears is to be via a single square key.
Specifications:
Material to be used: 4140 steel – specify any heat treatments that may need to be applied.
Operations: To be used for 4hrs a day; 5 days a week; 48 weeks a year.
The shaft has to be designed to operate in either rotational direction (Fully reversing).
The shaft is to transmit up to 2kW at 140 revs/ min.
Effective gear sizes: Input 120mm dia; output 80mm dia.Ignore any possible transverse loading on the gears.
You need to complete the following tasks:
1. Basic shaft design calculations to determine the initial shaft sizes for each section of the shaft taking the stress concentrations into account. (2%)
2. Use AS 1403 to determine the sizing according to the standard and compare your results to the original values. (2%)
3. Complete a SolidWorks model of the shaft and use FEA (Cosmos) to optimise the design after considering keyways, circlips grooves and step change points.(2%)
4. Complete a short report with separate sections for each of the three sets of work completed. (4%)
