Assignment title: Information
Assessment 1 - Server
Scenario
You are working on behalf of ACME Inventors who are a research and invention company that wants to
protect all of their research and data from any outside access.
They have 20 staff members and will be looking at expanding by 15% in the next 5 years.
At present they have been running their server infrastructure on Microsoft Windows 2008 and are
considering updating and migrating all their information to a newer server OS. As they have been
comfortable with the use of their current OS they are unsure if a newer Windows server OS will be easy
and familiar for them to use.
They only have 1 server currently; a Dell PowerEdge T130 with the following specifications:
An Intel Pentium Processor
4 GB of RAM
2x 200 Sata GB Hard Drive
Microsoft Server 2008
Server Roles:
Active Directory
DNS
DHCP
IIS (Local Intranet)
File storage
This server has served the business well for the past couple of years, however staff have noticed that it
can take some time before services respond and for transferring data back and forth from the server is
taking too long.
Virtualisation is a catchword that the business had heard and unsure what platform and hardware will
be sufficient to run various virtual machines. For the early transitational phase, ACME Inventors will be
looking at to run each server role in a separate virtual machine to keep them more secure.
As the data that business will have stored will be highly confidential, security is an important factor.
