Assignment title: Information
Manzana Insurance Assignment Due 11/15 by 9 pm EST
Submit your answers in a *single* pdf or Word file (maximum of 6 pages).
For this assignment, I want you to analyze the Manzana case assignment and answer the following
questions:
1. Consider how Manzana is calculating turnaround time in Exhibit 3. What are they doing wrong?
2. Use the information in the case and process flow principles to *properly* estimate flow time. I would
recommend using Exhibit 4 to estimate average processing times and the data for 2 nd , 1991 in Exhibit
6 to estimate demand levels. How do you results compare to what is being reported?
3. I have created a SimQuick model called "Manzana with Batching" that is posted on the course site.
The model is similar to other ones we've done in class with one exception: To simulate arrivals of
work into the system, I use the custom schedule feature (see below). This simulates 40 arrivals at
the start of every 450-minute workday. The purpose of this is to account for the potential problems
caused by "batching" work into the system.
3a. Create a graphical process flow chart for the SimQuick model, showing all buffers, workstations and
decision points.
3b. How did I control the routing of work to the different Underwriting centers? What is the implication for
flow times?
3c. What is the estimated flow time for a job that has to go through all four workstations by way of
Underwriting 1? By way of Underwriting 3? How do you results compare to what is being reported?
3d. Modify the model so that there is a single Underwriting buffer, and all jobs go through the first
available underwriting center. What can you conclude?
3e. Taking your modified model from Part d, what is the impact of adding a fourth underwriting area?
4. What recommendations would you make to Fruitvale to improve performance?
