Assignment title: Information
Analysis of sound in commercial video games
Introduction:
A video game can be commercially successful due in part to its stunning graphics, interactivity,
fun, gameplay and challenges, among other elements, including how engaging a video game is.
In addition, good ambient music, sound effects and narrations/voice overs can make a video
game more immersive and engaging. Sound can greatly improve player experience in video
games, and may affect the popularity/sales of some video games. There are a number of sound
parameters that directly affect the way we perceive sound, such as directivity, stereo position,
loudness, and fidelity, among others. The way we play the sound will also affect the player
experience. It includes the type of headphones, speakers and amplifiers/sound processors we use
for listening to video game sounds.
It is also important the place where the video game is played (its context of use), since the
physical characteristics of the context of use will affect the way we perceive the sounds from the
video game. In this assignment, you will play the games in the gaming lab
Instructions:
Your game should include natural and artificial sound effects (e.g. the sound of a thunder, the
sound a shot gun, etc.), background music, incidental music, and voice overs (verbal narrations
or messages made by people, such as the ones found in cut scenes, tutorials, the voice of an NPC,
etc.). You can talk about any game, such as available games on Playstation 4, 3, or 2, Xbox One
and 360 (+Kinect), Wii, Wii U, or Ouya consoles.
IMPORTANT: Let me know what game you will analyze.
Play the game for a reasonable time. Explore its contents and pay attention to its sounds.
Write a list of natural and man-made sound effects, background (ambient) music and voice overs
that appear in the game. Use one column for writing the type of sound heard (sound
effect/ambient music/voice), a second column describing the quality of the sound, a third column
describing how meaningful the sound was (was it timely and appropriate to its corresponding
action/event?), and a fourth column indicating how engaging the sound was.
Write a report (with at least 3 pages) containing the following:
The name of the video game analyzed.
The above list of the sounds and their description.
Find on the Internet how popular and commercially successful the chosen game is (or
was, if it is an old game). Add the information you found to the report. Add references
(sources of information) at the end of the report.
Explain in the report how important the sound effects, ambient music, and voice overs are
for the game, how they affect the player experience of the game and how do you think the
sound can be related to the success of the game.
Add photos of the test showing the game being played. Also, get screenshots of the game.
