Students are required to read the following background scenario and research relevant information to formulate a policy document in Task 1 and Action Plan for implementing and monitoring an Environmental Management System in Task 2
For students to successfully gauge understanding of this assessment, students must apply themselves and thoroughly research Australian Government Legislation to understand assessment criteria.
Background information:
Hotel businesses consume large amounts of natural resources, discharge large amounts of raw and solid waste which consequently affects the natural environment.
The Australian Government is raising awareness through creating initiatives and plans for businesses to take responsibility of the impact that it creates on the environment and adopt best practices for businesses such as "Going Green".
Hotel businesses have benefited from environmental initiatives through improving their corporate image and increasing resource and energy efficiency.
Hotel Kingston is concerned about being up to date and current with Government legislation changes and would like to develop and implement an Environmental Management System which they can set targets for improvement on providing sustainable business and increasing public awareness on "Green Initiatives" as part of quality assurance.
Task1:
Students to research Environmental Management Systems within the hotel sector and create a policy statement about how to incorporate environmental and sustainable practices into Hotel Kingston .
" Environmental management system (EMS) refers to the management of an organization's environmental programs in a comprehensive, systematic, planned and documented manner. It includes the organizational structure, planning and resources for developing, implementing and maintaining policy for environmental protection."

The statement must discuss commitment to these principles and must include:
Adhering to environmental legislation, (include water mangagement, energy management and waste management)
Selection of Suppliers
Task 2:
• You are employed as Compliance Officer for Kingston Hotel you have been asked to create an Action Plan- (Checklist) on how to develop and incorporate an Environmental Management System (EMS) into the hotel, which will lead to the accomplishment of key objectives being met.
• Students to create a table with the following 7 column headings: What, Why, How, Who, When, Expected outcome & Actual Outcome
• Action plan will be broken into 4 categories all criteria must be incorporated for an achieved result.
1) Investigation of current practices in relation to resource useage:
Review of current purchasing strategies and provide evidence of documented outcome
Investigation into initiatives or plans for environmental compliance
2) Set targets for performance:
Seek advice from industry specialists in relation to incorporating best practices into Hotel Futura
Show consultation with relevant stakeholders and key personnel in regards to:
• Analysis of collected data
• Evidence of solutions to workplace environmental issues
• Setting goals to achieve efficiency targets
3) Implement performance improvement strategies:
How will Hotel Futura implement and integrate Environmental Management System into current operational activities
Discuss how incorporated EMS system will be supervised and reviewed for improved practices
Implement costing strategies to maintain integrity of the natural environment
4) Monitor performance:
What tools will be used to evaluate and monitor implemented EMS into Hotel Futura
How will reports on outcomes be communicated to key personnel and stakeholders
Periodical review of efficiency targets
Create reward system for participants who excel in commitment to EMS
