ASSIGNMENT QUESTION PURPOSE The objectives of this assignment are to assess students' ability to critically discuss the use of media and ICT in daily life then analyse the effects of media and ICT on the family, community, and society as a whole. REQUIREMENTS Please read the following statement: Edward R. Murrow (Cited in Wartella, 1997) stated: "The instrument (television) can teach. It can illuminate. Yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise it is merely wires and lights in a box." Wartella himself said, "Television also holds the power to harm, to instill fear, and to render us callous to suffering. It can bring ugliness into the world. . . . We are at the moment in which the television industry and members of the industry we educate can influence the moral climate of television production. This is the context and matters of today's debate." i. Wartella's statements were made in 1997, more than 19 years ago. In the context of 2016 and in an environment where terrestrial television has to compete with satellite television, web TV and other contents from DVD, YouTube and other social media, your task is to critically discuss Murrow's and Wartella's statements. ii.
