Case Study: The Reflected Best-Self exercise has illuminated several barriers to finding purpose within mycurrent profession. The findings emphasise that I am at my best when I am working withothers. However, the most detrimental situational barrier to being my best self is that I amquite isolated. I am physically separated from my work colleagues and my daily tasks rarelyrequire input from others. The reduced interaction has weakened the social connections thatwere previously quite strong. Furthermore, my current role primarily lacks difficult tasks.Since the Reflected Best-Self exercise identified problem solving and creativity as keystrengths, without a challenging work environment I feel unmotivated, depressed andunproductive. Finally, I am aware that my boss does not value my contribution to training andmentoring staff. This would suggest that within the context of my workplace, I am unable toexercise this strength without first addressing this barrier.Importantly, through performing the Reflected Best-Self exercise, I have recognised thesignificance of finding purpose in my professional life. After spending seven years with mycurrent employer, I feel disillusioned because I believe my achievements are meaningless.Duncan, Kosine and Steger (2008) suggest that an individual who struggles with their identitywill also struggle to choose a career path. This is something that resonates with me, as I donot know who I am and I lack a clear vision for my professional career. However, thestrengths identified when forming my best-self portrait have helped me to understand what IPositive Psychology Assignment 110need to feel satisfied and motivated, which can be used to guide my future career choices toensure they are aligned with my best-self portrait.Best-Self Vision StatementGiven the Reflected Best-Self analysis, the strengths that will help me to be the best I can beinclude problem solving, organising, and planning. My potential is realised when I amapplying these strengths to solve complex problems by considering solutions from multipleperspectives. In addition, I envisage myself as an advisor and a mentor; providing guidanceand insight to help others achieve their potential.In my professional life, I will deem myself successful when I find purpose and meaning in myprofession. I will strive to improve my current lack of job satisfaction by consciously seekingsituations where I am able to leverage my strengths. In addition, I will consciously recognisewhen I am employing my strengths to continue to reinforce the behaviour and continue to feelpositive and build resilience.ConclusionThrough an assessment of my strengths using the Reflected Best-Self exercise, supplementedwith the Values In Action survey, a portrait myself at my best has been developed. Followinga review of the literature concerning positive psychology and positive emotions, the benefitsof applying these practices to the workplace has been discussed. After analysing the commonthemes that emerged from responses to the Reflected Best-Self survey, it has been determinedthat I am at my best when I am problem solving and organising projects. I thrive whenoffering support to others with advice and guidance. Upon further reflection I have been ableto identify significant personal and situational barriers that are currently preventing myselfPositive Psychology Assignment 111from being my best. Finally, a vision statement has been presented that outlining whatstrengths can help me live up to my full potential and achieve authentic happiness.
