Assignment title: Information
Assessment - Individual Major Project: Comparative Study It is now common practice for employees to work as expatriates for multi-national organisations located in countries where they do not hold citizenship. Compare and contrast two national cultures based on cultural theory literature available to you, in the form of peer reviewed journal articles and reputable texts. Discuss the implications of this literature from an organisational perspective. How might an employee who comes from one of your chosen national cultures experience similarities or challenging differences in working for the other? For example, you may wish to focus upon how culture may influence organisational practices, values, management, communication, ethical assumptions and how conflict and negotiation is addressed in the host culture and the possible responses of an expatriate coming from your chosen culture. What recommendations would you make to senior management of a multinational company with respect to the necessary preparation and development of an expatriate assigned to an overseas appointment in your selected host country? Adopting a report format, answer the question above using the following headings: Title: Major Project: Comparative Study. (Insert the names of the two national cultures you plan to investigate into your title). Add your name and ID number on the title page. Introduction: State clearly the two national cultures you have chosen to investigate. You may provide brief information on geographical location or demographic material. Profiling of National Cultures: Explain how national culture may influence organisational practices, values, management, communication, ethical assumptions and how conflict and negotiation is addressed in each of these cultural contexts. Provide this information first for one country and then the other without comparing the two at this stage. Assessing areas where an expatriate from Country A may find challenges, differences or synergies in adapting to work in Country B: This section is where you critically address the question about how an expatriate from Country A working in Country B may be challenged or find synergies in operating within an organisation in that national culture. A critical perspective can also be demonstrated by noting differences or similarities in the perspectives of authors and researchers with respect to the influence of national culture on organisational practices and employee behaviour. Conclusion and Recommendations: Sum up the main areas expressed in your report and make recommendations about how an expatriate can be assisted to prepare for a future expatriate position during orientation and later in his or her contracted employment in order to maximise performance.
