This study is about the selected topic "The risk of terrorism in Australia". The specific interest of this research plan is to investigate or find out how do Australian teenagers join the "Islamic State or IS" and stand alongside other extremists or "jihadists". It is essential to study the foundation that cause teenagers, girls and boys as young as 14 years of age leaving schools and their homes in western countries to join Islamic extremists in the Middle East. Australia has played a leading role in combating terrorism; however, authorities and terror experts failed to uncover this jihadist networks in Australia. The area this study is proposing to investigate is the family of these teenagers and the social associates such as Mosques, Islamic centres and social networking sites in Western Sydney. It is important to study this type of rapid change in the behaviours of these Muslims teenagers as it may pose risk to Australians and national security. Identifying the expressed psychological state of these teenagers will help to address the risk behind it. In Shanahan's research, it is estimated about "60 Australians fighting and another 150 being monitored" as the fear of their intention to travel to and from Australia (2014, p. 8). Those Australians may use their fighting skills against their home countries in the future. Could it be their religious and cultural experiences that defined their psychological development and criminal behaviour? The possible social issue is not definite terrorism but also a suspected Islam phobia, a religious terrorism. In what manner and how Australian Muslims were responding and communicating with the initiators or supporters. The recent social implications of fearing terrorism in Australia is relevant to research of this topic. The media construction of recent terrorism events and the government extensive legislation regime around counter-terrorism and national security played the role in this study. 293 Question 2: The research question (100 words) The question that a social researcher may ask in terms of social practice and cultural assumptions cannot be clear without considering the circumstances in which this social phenomena occurs. This social research looks at developing a question about how to monitor Australian jihadists who pose risk to Australian public. The main key of this study is to investigate the social question which is about an ongoing jihads related events occur in Australia and western countries. The study looks at the home-grown terrorists in a fresh approach rather than depending on outdated social assumptions or accept social beliefs. Thus, the question is: How to address the ideological incentive of Australian teenagers who follow a radical path in Western Sydney? 115 Question 3: Clearly explain your epistemological position and your theoretical framework for the research topic you have selected. (100 Words) Existing researches and observations about the Australian jihadists is the important part of this research. However, the way that this research should be done reflects the epistemological position of the selected topic as it raises questions to understand the behaviours of Muslim teenagers. Meeting with these teenagers by using the right stance confirms the theoretical framework for the research topic. How this research can come to know about and from the Muslim teenagers identifies what can be researched. This objectivism epistemological position will justify the best research method that is appropriate to investigate about this topic. The way of doing this research is more of interpretivism paradigm. 107 Question 4: Identify and explain any ethical issues associated with your research question. (100) Questioning the behaviours of Muslim teenagers requires ethical application. As the topic is focusing on a particular group who can be as young as 14 years old and of religious beliefs, ethical considerations are addressed in the research process. According to the guidelines of "National Health and Medical Research Council" such considerations are taken in relation to: consent has to be informed, identity protection, participants' disclosure, contextual and poses no harm or bias. As some may provide information about some known teenager jihadists that can produce sensitive information. In Australia, it requires to fill in ethical clearance forms in order to perform the research and provide acceptable reasons. 104 Question 5: Methodology/research design. (300) This study is adopting two methodological approaches. One is the focus group or observation of three focus groups and about thirty individual interviews with the family of Muslims teenagers or their associates and perhaps members of the broader community. A focus group is the design of how to choose the appropriate method. It is a form of qualitative data where a group of Muslims people are asked about their beliefs, feelings, views and attitudes towards terrorism issues in Australia. The way of gathering information is through group discussion which involve about thirty people. It requires a trained "moderator" to guide the group and it is conducted in an informal way where every participants are free to give their opinions about an aspect. The focus group is mainly to be selected from Australian Muslims to represent those who joined the jihads in Iraq and Syria.
