This subject aims to provide students with the opportunity to acquire and demonstrate foundation knowledge underpinning nursing skills in the following practice areas: health assessment and risk screening, maintaining and enhancing skin integrity, alteration in bowel and urinary function, pre and post operative care and patient education at a beginning level. In addition knowledge and skills will be demonstrated in non-parenteral medication administration and numeracy. Teaching strategies will include simulation, face to face tutorials and online lectures and activities (for distance education students this will involve a 4 day residential school). Students enrolling in this subject will undertake 80 hours of workplace learning in a variety of health care settings in a supernumerary capacity under the supervision of a registered nurse. Each student's workplace performance will be assessed using the Nursing Competency Assessment Schedule (NCAS). Students will be engaged in professional reflective practice to enhance and guide their clinical practice. Introduction This subject will build on the concepts studies and skills obtained in NRS112. Additionally skills will be developed in numeracy in nursing and the administration of non - parenteral medications. Teaching strategies will include online lectures and activities, face to face tutorials and simulated laboratory sessions. Students enrolled in this subject will also undertake a compulsory 80 hour workplacement in a supernumerary capacity, under the supervision of a registered nurse. Each student's workplace performance will be assessed using the National Competency Assessment Schedule (NCAS). Students will also be engaged in professional reflective practice to enhance and guide their clinical practiceOn successful completion of this subject, students will be able to conduct and document at a beginning level, a systematic, evidence based nursing assessment and risk screen (aligns with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse: 1.1, 1.2, 2.2, 2.5, 2.6, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 8.1, 8.2, 9.2). be able to communicate clearly with team members, both in verbal handover and in written documentation (NMBA 1.3, 2.3, 2.5, 2.6, 5.1, 5.2, 6.1, 9.2, 9.3, 9.4, 9.5, 10.3). be able to participate in the planning and documentation of nursing care in consultation with individuals, significant others and the interdisciplinary health care team in accordance with organisational and legal requirements (NMBA 1.1, 1.2, 2.2, 2.5, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, 6.4, 9.2, 10.3). be able to provide basic health education to clients in an effective manner, including appropriate documentation (NMBA 1.2, 2.5, 2.6, 7.7, 9.2, 9.3, 9.4). be able to describe and demonstrate safe and legal medication administration via identified routes (NMBA 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.2, 2.5, 2.6, 7.1, 7.2, 7.4, 7.8, 9.2, 9.5). be able to demonstrate competence in calculations related to medication administration (NMBA 2.6, 7.1, 7.2, 7.4). be able to demonstrate a broad factual knowledge base pertaining to health assessment and risk screening, maintaining and enhancing skin integrity, alteration in bowel and urinary function, pre and post operative care and patient education (NMBA 1.1, 1.2, 2.2, 2.6, 3.2, 5.1, 5.2, 7.3, 7.4, 7.7). Assumed knowledge NRS112 Practicum requirements Students undertaking this subject will undertake eighty (80) hours of workplace learning in an Multi Purpose or District hospital environment. During this placement, the student will work in a supernumery capacity, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Each student's performance during the workplace learning placement will be assessed using the Bachelor of Nursing Workplace Learning Assessment tool, where student performance is evaluated against the NMBA National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse.
