Project Brief and Context An international firm importing steel products to Australia, has bought an industrial site near the Perth harbour area. You have been engaged as construction manager to assist with the design and construction of the company's new premises using steel construction. The brief includes the development of a warehouse with overall dimensions of 18 metre width, 34 metre length and an internal working height of minimum 8 metres. An 8 metre wide by 28 metre long warehouse area is required for an internal product assembly line, which requires the 8.0m overhead height for cranage, conveyor belts and lifting products onto delivery trucks. Inside the warehouse are also to be accommodated: a display and meeting room to be used for education and demonstration purposes approx. 250m2 large, company offices with toilets and kitchen of approx. 80 m2 total area and a storage area of approx. 150 m2 area. Part 1) Understanding of concepts and key issues Which 5 key questions would you ask the client about the site and the project to ensure that the client appreciates issues around steel construction? Explain why each question and its possible response is important and will inform your building construction decisions. Part 2) Application and research knowledge to project development Prepare a floor plan, a building cross section and at least one front and one side elevation at a scale of 1:100 (1.0cm element on your drawing = 1.0 metre element to be constructed) to illustrate your steel construction for the warehouse. Dimension the drawings and annotate all main structural and non-structural elements, internally and externally. Refer to the BCA, relevant Australian Standards, steel manufacturer information and other research sources to inform your design and construction decisions. Describe your design and proposed construction of the company premises. Part 3) Critical analysis and management decision making Prepare and annotate the following 3 details at a scale of 1:20. - Footing detail with connection to load bearing column, - Wall section with external and internal cladding and - Wall to roof detail with guttering. Critically discuss (that means in narrative text, not in dot points) each detail in terms of its advantages as well as possible disadvantages. Your focus should be on construction, function of building elements and long term performance.
