Assignment title: Information

Design Elements and Principles 'Creature' Project Timeline: Class 1, 2, 3, 4 Deadline: Due at the end of Class 4 (Saturday Midnight) via CloudDeakin Weighting: 30% Detail: Students are required to demonstrate their understanding of a range of Design Elements and Principles and Gestalt Laws. Using the idea of "creatures" as a theme, students are required to design 2 detailed creatures and represent 8 design elements and principles. Your creature images need to vary in medium and design so consider using ink, pencil, markers, paint and paper. A high standard of finish is critical. Only black and white may be used in your final designs, however, marks can be made using a variety of mediums and colour. - Experiment with mark making both on and off the computer to create a large archive of abstract forms. This archive should be non representational (ie not drawings of things) - Using marks from your archive to build 2 finished 'creatures' you have built in adobe illustrator. - Using the design principles as a guide for composition; create 8 composition layouts with your creature and explain how each different composition represents those design principles - Collect your mark making, research, creatures, your final compositions and explanatory text in a single pdf with consideration to size (optimally under 10mb in size). One single PDF file must be submitted to CloudDeakin. The Presentation: Remember to save all content from each step of this assignment, you can work with any materials but the final outcome must be in black and White and stored as one digital pdf file. STEP ONE: Creating Marks by Hand (40 examples) Start with simple textural, exploratory and playful mark making methods as well as drawing in traditional methods and calculated ways. You don't need to work solely with paint and pen, you can use any found materials and use them to create marks, STEP TWO: Research Research creatures on the internet and explore mediums and methods of representing realistic and abstract images. STEP THREE: Scanning Scan your mark making exercises into a digital form. STEP FOUR: Digital experimentation (40 examples) Use your scans to experiment with in Adobe illustrator, follow examples given in class and discover your own processes for developing interesting outcomes. Don't worry about the final design just yet, focus on experimentation. STEP FIVE: Build 2 x amazing creatures! Critically analyse each of your mark making and digital experiments to see which ones can be used to create a creature. Think laterally about what a 'Creature' is. Try to build the creature in an organised way so that you can manipulate it into different forms in Step 6 STEP SIX: Arrange each creature in 2 different compositions using the Design principles and explain each composition. On a single a3 page, draw 8x 10x10cm boxes. In those boxes, present your creature in different ways using the design principles outlined on the following page to guide you. Return to your research and the lectures and explain your compositions and which principles you have used below each design (50-100words per composition). Complete this document to demonstrate your understanding of the design elements and principles evident in your submission. Principle: Symmetrical or Asymmetrical Principle: Design with Contrast (Emphasis) or Radial Balance design Definition of principle: Definition of principle: Explain in your own words and through discussion of your design how you have demonstrated the design principle. Principle: Gestalt Law of Closure Principle: Gestalt Law of Continuity (Movement) Definition of principle: Definition of principle: Explain in your own words and through discussion of your design how you have demonstrated the design principle. Principle: Gestalt Law of Proximity Principle: Gestalt Law of Similarity (Pattern/Repetition) Definition of principle: Definition of principle: Principle: Design with Scale Principle: One you define Definition of principle: Definition of principle: Assignment 1: Website Visual Research Criteria Percentage of Mark Use appropriate design process and idea generation techniques • Completed 40 unique hand made mark making experiments using different media and approaches 10% • Completed 40 unique digital experiments combining both your hand-make marks & digital techniques 10% Display self- directed learning, with attention to detail. • Evidence of experimentation in the final designs, creative use of digital and hand made outcomes 10% • Creation and completion of 2 final creatures that reflect the processes and use of a combination of design elements 10% • Ability to arrange 8 different compositions showing an understanding of the specified design principles 10% Demonstrate and apply information technology skills and theory. • Successful and accurate use of the Bezier pen in the creation of vector content. 10% • Evidence of basic skills for organising content within adobe illustrator, alignment, transform, duplicate etc. 10% • Successfully saved and uploaded assignment as a pdf document under 10mb in size. 10% Discuss and interpret visual communication design using written and oral methods • Correct identification and explanation of design elements and principles 10% Total 100% This submission forms 30% of the unit assessment total Due Date: end of Class 4 (Saturday Midnight) Please upload all relevant files to CloudDeakin as a single pdf
