WELCOME
Welcome. This unit is one unit in which you will focus on the role that Drama, Music and Movement and
indeed all the arts play in early learning and development. The Arts allow us to express feelings and respond to
the expressions of others, and to re-present them, reflect on them and create a new story about them. Very
young children are able to use the materials, forms and sensitivities of the Arts to communicate before they
understand and have control over the structures and features of the formal spoken or written language.
Becoming 'Arts literate' involves experimenting and engaging with ideas, materials, instruments and
techniques, learning through the senses, taking creative risks in a safe environment, exploring the elements
and discovering what it is you like about a piece of music and why and how music works in the world;
discovering how dramatic play and activities engage us in verbal and physical communication through
imitative role behavior, make believe and social interaction with real and imaginary others; exploring the
transfer of weight, force, energy and position of the body in space and being involved in creative movement
activities alone and in cooperation with others. Exploring the world around us and establishing a sense of
home and place in our own bodies, with our own unique identity.
The Arts have a cognitive function in that they show us things in new ways, deepening and or changing our
existing understandings. It is my hope that you will have embodied experiences where you are able to engage
with these aspects of teaching and learning in the Performing Arts through dance, drama and music.
Educators support young children's learning in and through the performing art by supplying interesting and
quality experiences, giving time to explore, develop and finish a piece or work (Arts making) followed by
sharing it with others (Arts response). They talk and respond to the works asking questions that respect the
individual representations, but encourage further thinking, experimentation and learning (aesthetic
development). They also introduce songs, dances and allow for role play and games in different forms and from
different cultures, providing the language with which to talk about, appreciate and critique performing arts
pieces and experiences.
I hope you will engage in experiences and grow to understand more about the development your own
performing arts experiences that support young children's learning in and through the creative arts.

ABOUT THIS UNIT
This unit aims to broaden and deepen the student's knowledge of the theoretical and practical aspects of the
role that music, dance and drama play in children's development and learning. Students will explore and
reflect upon the creative use of singing, dancing, playing, creating and moving, and develop repertoire
appropriate for use in the classroom. Students will examine and analyse aspects of what becoming arts literate
means and the role that these art forms have in the Indigenous Australian and multicultural Australia. The unit
involves experimenting and engaging with the body, sounds, spaces, objects and ideas, exploring the elements
and discovering why and how creative arts work in the world. They will experience and analyse the cognitive
function of the arts in that they show us things in new ways, deepening and or changing our existing
understandings. They will examine and analyse the way in which music, dance and drama also offer the means
for helping children to understand and consolidate what they learn. Students will engage in activities and
experiences that encourage and nurture them, so that they can in turn, nurture the musical, kinaesthetic and
dramatic understandings and expressions in others.
Unit development in response to student feedback
Every trimester, we ask students to tell us, through eVALUate, what helped and hindered their learning in
each Unit. You are strongly encouraged to provide constructive feedback for this Unit when eVALUate opens
(you will be emailed a link).
In previous versions of this unit, students have told us that these aspects of the Unit have helped them to
achieve the learning outcomes:
● It was such an advantage to attend intensives and be fully engaged with experiential learning that was
play based
● Sharing ideas and collaborating in groups at the intensives and creating/presenting peer assessed work
really showed how social learning is powerful
They have also made suggestions for improvement, and so this is what we have done:
● Based on student feedback indicating there was too much assessment, we have created 3 separate but
connected assessment tasks one for Dance, one for Drama and one for Music. These will come together in
a web-based portfolio.
● Students complained that there was not enough time dedicated to learning experiences for the Arts, so we
have extended the hours for the on-campus students.Deakin University, Faculty of Arts and Education

your studies.
