Assessment 4: Test the Document
Assessment Overview:
This assessment task has been designed to allow you to demonstrate your ability to apply your
knowledge and skills when building a document using eXtensible Markup Language – test the
document.
You will be assessed on your ability to:
Test the document off-line against the specifications, and confirm the document's validity.
Test, where appropriate, the document online against the specifications, and with a
representative audience.
Analyse the test results and confirm the document's validity.
You will also be assessed on the foundation skills embedded in this assessment including:
Reading Skills: Critically analyses specifications and other documentation from a
variety of sources, and consolidates information, to determine requirements.
Interact with Others: Selects, implements, and seeks to improve protocols governing
communications to clients and co-workers, in a range of work contexts.
Get the Work Done: Accepts responsibility for planning and sequencing complex tasks
and workload, negotiating key aspects with others and taking into account capabilities,
efficiencies and effectiveness.
Get the Work Done: Applies systematic and analytical decision-making processes for
complex and non-routine situations.

Internet access
A computer with at least Windows 7 OS or Mac OS X, if not higher
Word processing software capable of reading and writing to a .docx file
A web browser for viewing and testing the site such as Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome.
Classroom students can access the Internet, computer and the Internet within the campus.
Distance students are required to provide their own internet access to a computer with word

Carefully read through the scenario and requirements below and complete the task according to
the instructions. If your performance in this task is deemed unsatisfactory, your Assessor will
provide you with feedback and an action plan including areas to focus on to improve your
skills/knowledge to perform the task. Once you have had opportunity to practice these skills you
can arrange to be re-assessed in this task.
Scenario
Accove Pty Ltd is a Small to Medium Enterprise based in Brisbane that specialises in designing
and building widgets for various operating systems. Widgets are small programs built to
accomplish certain tasks to be integrated with other software such as a small window that displays
the weather information for the user's current geographical location or a list of recent local news
stories. The company has recently had an overhaul of their online presence and would like a
brand new XML document to meet provide a better experience for staff and customers.
Specifically, they have hired you to work with the managing director to oversee the entire project.
The primary focus and purpose of the XML document is to store all relevant information related
to Accove's widgets within a format that is easy to navigate and integrate into other applications.
Accove expects that this will increase staff productivity and allow for consistent information about
the software they produce. This should result in a reduction of costs in the company and improve
overall productivity across the organisation. In short, it will function as a data storage that will
contain information related to widgets such as the name, category, company that created it, date
created, programmer(s), date of last update and images. There is a remote possibility that the
requirements may change throughout the development life cycle.
Things to consider in preparation for the practical task
In order to prepare for the discussion, it is suggested that you consider several key areas. You
will need to be able to demonstrate your ability to build a document using an extensible markup
language including:
1. Checking an XML document against client requirements.
2. Validating the XML document on an online validator, informing the client of the results.
3. Analysing the test results gathered from this testing.
Before you begin this assessment create a new folder called ICTWEB504-A4 YourName. This
folder will contain your answers to the following assessment and must be submitted to your
assessor for marking.
Environment and context
In this assessment, you will be playing the role of an expert web developer with a specialty in
developing XML documents. The following assessment will require you to test that your XML
document meets the client specifications, is valid and meets the audience's expectations, and the

Task 1 Test the Document Offline against the Specifications and
Confirm the Document's Validity
You have finally delivered the XML document to Accove, the Managing Director is very pleased
with your work. The next phase of the development cycle will involve testing. Accove has prepared
a list of test cases derived from the majority of the client requirements that they would like you to
review and compare to your XML document.
Specifically, they would like you to use the Accove Widget XML Checklist which can be
downloaded from your mystudydesk account. Download it and rename it ICTWEB504-A4
T1.docx.
Check that the website works in accordance with the functional requirements given to you from
the Managing Director. If any of the test cases fail when checked, please ensure that you correct
the issues.
When you have completed this task save your file.

Task 2 Test the Document Online against the Specifications and with
a Representative Audience
The Managing Director of Accove has reviewed your Testing Checklist and agrees that the XML
document meets the core functional requirements outlined previously. He would like you to send
him instructions to demonstrate that the file created aligns with W3C industry standards using
their online markup validator.
Please write an email to the Accove Managing Director, you will need to direct them to the W3C
validator site and provide step-by-step instructions to demonstrate that your document is wellformed and valid. Be sure to attach the XML document and a screenshot of the XML passing
validation so that they are aware of what it should look like. Once you have received an email
back from the Managing Director, save both emails in a document named ICTWEB504-A4
T2.docx.

When you have completed this task save your file.
Once you have completed this website, open your ICTWEB504-A4 YourName folder. Create a
sub-folder named ICTWEB504-A4 T2. Copy the ICTWEB504-A4 T2.docx document as well as
the attachments of the email (the screenshot and the XML file) into this folder.

Task 3 Analyse the Test Results and Confirm the Document's Validity
You have now completed the internal client requirement and external industry standard testing of
the Accove Widget XML document. Your final task in this project is to review the testing results,
analyse the information, confirm the document's validity and close the project.
Email the Managing Director of Accove and discuss the following topics:
- The testing that has been conducted
- The overall results from the testing
- Confirm that the XML is valid
- A request to close the project
Once you have completed writing this email, save it in a Word document called ICTWEB504-A4
T3.docx.
