ASSESSMENT AIM AND INSTRUCTIONS
Scenario
This assignment will enable each candidate to understand the processes involved in analysing sports performance by engaging in computer and field-based assessments of golf. The analysis will involve an interdisciplinary perspective of performance of a golfer with a view to improving performance.
Task 1
Each candidate is required to prepare an outline methodology for field-based research in one aspect of golf. The research should be aimed at some aspect of skill related performance in golf. It would be advisable to firstly understand what 'performance analysis' is before you define what you will be researching. You will then be in a better position to define your own particular methodology for the research.
To complete this successfully each candidate needs to examine the role of notational analysis and then apply this to golf.
To complete this accurately each candidate will need to consider all of the following aspects of performance analysis: The role of feedback; movement analysis; tactical evaluation; technical evaluation; statistical compilation; video; flowcharts; should all be included in the overall analysis of golf performance.
You will need to integrate these concepts into your methodology with clear justifications as to why and how you will be using them in golf. Some discussion and analysis of relevant research that includes some journal articles must be undertaken by each candidate.
A recommended approach to this task would be to consider how best the information observed, recorded, and analysed would be most useful to the athlete themselves. Then you will be in a position to link the overall principles of notational analysis to your particular ideas for your field-based research.
(Task 1 is handed in separately – see first hand-in date, this Methodology will be marked out of 20% and handed back prior to the final hand-in date for the remainder of the marks = 80%))
Task 2
Following Task 1, each candidate should now have a more detailed understanding of the uses of notational analysis and observation. This task then requires the candidate to develop and design a suitable hand notation system so that golf performance can be analysed in some detail.
The particular system must consider and allow for the following design considerations: construction; application; player; action; position; body parts; time; outcome; cues; codes; type of software; data entry; data output; feedback; availability; validity; reliability.
Task 3
Each candidate is now required to utilise the notational analysis system designed in Task 1&2. The analysis should be both qualitative and quantitative in that the data used should be in enough quantity (quantitative) so that real detail (qualitative) information can be analysed. Please ensure all the data is included as part of the final assessment.
Task 4
Now that all of the data and analysis has been carried out, complete a statistical compilation of the data that considers the following areas: precision of measurement; summarising data; statistical models; presentation; pictorial representation; descriptive data; frequency; sequences.
Task 5
All of the information gathered from Task 4 must now be put together to create a Performance Profile (this should provide a summary of the data –identifying strengths and weaknesses) accompanied by an Action Plan (with Smart Goals) that identifies how the athlete can improve in the future.
Each candidate will then be able to include all of the relevant data and profile of performance to the tutor in a format that is visually accurate, accompanied by a clear written commentary that includes the following points:
• How did you develop the notational analysis system?
• Why did you use the particular notational analysis system?
• What problems did you have to overcome when analysing performance?
• How did you manage to construct the performance profile from this data?
• Do you consider the notational analysis system used successful? Justify your answer.
INDICATIVE CRITERIA Wt% Fail (0-39%) (40-49%) (50-59%) (60-69%) (70-100%)
Logical structure and outcome (with a sound command of grammar, punctuation, syntax and spelling)
5%
No structure, random pieces of information put together with no logical order, grammar, punctuation, syntax and spelling renders work largely incomprehensible, nearly impossible to extract intended meaning.
Unclear structure, little cohesion of flow, poor syntax, grammar, punctuation syntax and spelling and poor communication of meaning.
Some structure, some cohesion and flow, reasonable communication of intended meaning.
Good structure, good cohesion and flow, generally good grammar, punctuation, spelling and syntax with few mistakes, in the majority of cases the intended meaning is communicated effectively
Consistent and outstanding structure, full cohesion and constant unambiguous development of thought, near perfect grammar, punctuation, syntax and spelling, intended meaning clear at all times.
Outline Methodology for Field-Research in Golf supported by relevant research from Textbooks and Journals
20% No clear methodology identified and very limited understanding of the concepts of notational analysis. Evidence of some methodology applied to the overall golf research. Reasonable evidence of understanding of notational analysis with supportive research. Some clear evidence demonstrating what the methodology is, combined with some good understanding of notational analysis linked to golf with supportive research. Evidence of some more detailed links to the concepts of notational analysis that are linked to a reasonable degree to the methodology of research and field based research in golf Very clear evidence to demonstrate the integration of the theory of notational research to the overall methodology used. Very good detail seen in the methodology that is highly realistic and relevant to golf research
Design and utilization of the Notational System 20% Very limited structure or logic to the design for the research. Poor application of field research to the selected area of golf performance. Reasonable structure to the design that demonstrates some understanding and links to the methodology seen in assignment 10.1. Evidence to show that the Notational system has been used effectively Clear design to the notational system that allows for accurate data collection based upon the methodology of research seen in 10.1 Very good application of the methodology to the overall design used for data collection. Very little evidence of ambiguity of design combined with clear evidence of comprehensive field research.
Accuracy & relevance of statistical models to the performance profile and action plan. 40% Very limited statistical evidence that is relevant or related to the methodology or design for the research. Poor attempt to profile and action plan. Some accuracy and relevance seen in the statistics. Some variety of data profile with some visual representation. Limited performance profile and action plan. Some variety of data presentation, that is relevant and accurate. Good attempt to profile and action plan the performer. SMART targets in some detail. Limited errors seen in the presentation of the data that is linked to the profile and the action plan. Highly integrated examples of visual variety of data results that is clearly linked to a very realistic profile and action plan for the future.
Sourcing of information and referencing (a wide range of critically selected references fully documented in the text and bibliography using the Harvard Standard)
15%
No evidence that elements of this criterion have been addressed to any reasonable extent.
Poor range and number of sources, poorly referenced in the text and bibliography, some lack relevancy, most sources appear not to have been critically analysed for their validity and appropriateness. .Journal sources should be used
Fair range and number used only partly referenced in text and bibliography correctly as many sources are relevant and only half appear to be critically analysed for their validity and appropriateness.
Good range and number used, in the majority of cases well referenced in text and bibliography, the majority of sources are relevant, most appear to have been critically analysed for their validity and appropriateness..
Extensive range and number used precise, nearly wholly correct and consistent referencing in text and bibliography. All sources are highly relevant and all appear to have been critically analysed for their validity and appropriateness.
