Aims and Relevance
A considered management approach to solicit employee engagement and high
performance working is increasingly seen as the only differentiator present within
organisations capable of creating a sustained competitive business advantage.
This unit aims to provide you with knowledge, skills and the understanding
required leading and managing people effectively for sustained organisational
economic performance, competitiveness and prosperity.
The question key to this unit is: what are the strategies that organisational leaders
and managers must deploy in order to raise levels of employee performance in
different types of contemporary organisations?

1 Demonstrate critical knowledge and understanding around key and contemporary
debates about theory and practice in the specific fields of high performance working,
engagement, team management and motivation whilst assessing the importance of
management and leadership in the change process.

2 Evaluate and analyse any given workplace scenario relating to relevant models for
effective people performance, leadership and management within the organisational
context. You will diagnose and identify appropriate solutions to any issues or problems
that will limit optimum work performance or affect the application and utilisation of
worker capability.

Produce an analysis of relevant literature around key and contemporary debates about
theory and practice in high performance working, employee engagement and motivation at
work.
Satisfactorily evaluate relevant literature around current theories of effective leadership and
the methods used to develop leaders in organisations.
Present a clear and concise business report.

Critically analyse the leading theories behind group and team effectiveness and flexibility at
all levels in organisations.
Evaluate adequately the dilemmas of ethical and responsible behaviour that managers face
and suggest appropriate analytical tools to help manage them.
Present critical arguments measuring the effectiveness of change management in
organisations.
Present adequate evidence of knowing how to manage and lead people in a clear and

Assessment methods
You will complete two written reports of 2000 words which will be weighted at 50% each. The aim of both
these assignments is to provide you with appropriate management knowledge, understanding and skills
necessary in writing a practical business report, set against a workplace scenario (or exceptionally a case
study organisation) and incorporating some theoretical input introduced in this unit.
The first assignment will investigate the vital role that managers play as authentic leaders in creating a work
environment that leads to higher levels of employee performance and engagement within a changing
organisational environment.
The second assignment will explore the other outcomes and topics for this unit, for example, how the role of
teams, organisational structure and social responsibility contribute to organisational effectiveness and
efficiency.
Successful completion of the course will give you a comprehensive and detailed overview of how you as a
leader and manager are able to make a greater impact in the organisation, increasing your contribution and
effectiveness in working with your employees and colleagues in order to increase the well-being of the
business for sustained competitive advantage.

Learner Development
This Unit focuses on the development of your abilities in the following areas:
Enquiry
Case studies as well as illustrative examples from journals and current news articles will be
utilised by you to encourage analysis and provide challenges to your learning. Videos and
podcasts will also be integrated into the learning experience to enhance understanding of
effective management and leadership in practice.
Contextual
understanding
Special attention will be placed upon the evidence gathered by a number of professional
bodies to include the Chartered Management Institute and the Chartered Institute of
Personnel and Development. Both Institutions lead on management practices and policies
that need to be in place for high performance working to exist. The unit will also emphasise
what you will need to do to become more effective in managing and leading people.
Collaboration
You will be collaborative in forming groups to discuss the assignment tasks and to share
information relevant to your learning in your Business schools and on the discussion
boards as well as through group and tutor support.
Enterprise
You will demonstrate enterprise by determining creative and innovative solutions to
challenges encountered in exploring organisational issues. As a master's student attending
a limited number of workshops you will be expected to manage your time and learning
