Question 1 Both the textbook and your learning materials argue that leadership is not only a science and an art, but also rational and emotional. Using concrete examples (descriptions of actual incidents) from your own leadership, and/or leadership you have personally observed, discuss and evaluate these claims. Use as much theory as you can to show you can analyse leadership behaviour process in terms of the theories and concepts in the unit. Question 2 Group development has been described in terms of stages in both your textbook and the learning materials. Describe these stages and give concrete examples of the characteristics associated with each stage from your personal experience of a group. Suggest interventions you made or could have made to address problems Note: you should give relevant examples as well along with discussing key principles. Question 3 You have a diverse workforce that is located in a number of different locations. The different locations may be global, national or local. With forecast growth and an upcoming change in delivery strategies, you are concerned about how managers and staff in these different locations will cope. (a) Using relevant theory/ies and examples critically analyse the challenges in leading a geographically dispersed team (b) What assistance might they need to achieve their team and personal goals? (10 marks) Note: your answer to this question should draw on your understanding of the principles covered in the literature. Question 4 a) The textbook discuses the Triarchic Theory of Intelligence that describes three kinds of intelligence: Analytical, practical and creative intelligence. Explain the essence of this theory and give examples of each from your memory or imagination (not the text book) of these types of intelligence and say how each is important to leadership. Identify any criticisms you may have of this theory and/or strengths of such a model. b) Emotional Intelligence (EI) was described by Aberman as "the degree to which thoughts and feelings are aligned". Using examples from your own behaviour and experience in leadership, discuss what you think he means and why this might be Page 4 of 4 important. For extra marks compare this take/s on EI to other perspectives. Identify which model you personally favour and why. Question 5 Probably each of us as leaders and managers thinks of power and influence a little differently. With your understanding of the literature as a guide, answer the following: (a) Analyse the dynamics and impact of power in your organization. (b) From your understanding of influence tactics, use theory to analyse a situation you were faced with and what influence tactics you used. Did your intervention correspond with the theory? How effective was the intervention – use evidence (concrete examples) to support your claims. Question 6 Analyse an organizational change you have personally witnessed through the lens of change theory. To what extent was the change conducted consistent with the theories outlined in the text and learning materials. Use concrete examples (what happened and who said what) to support your analysis.
