Introducing a 'Bring Your Own Device' (BYOD) program for a pharmaceutical sales team
A large pharmaceutical company is considering changing the way that it provides information technology to
its Australian sales team of 120 staff. Rather than providing a laptop, tablet and smart phone, the company
is considering paying extra salary and either allowing or requiring employees to bring their own devices
(BYOD). Organisations are increasingly adopting BYOD programs. Of course any employee-provided devices
and software will need to be compatible with the existing information system (IS) infrastructure.
The company's Chief Information Officer (CIO) has undertaken some initial background reading. The CIO is
aware that a BYOD program is likely to improve employee satisfaction, but also creates potential issues
such as security risks and device or software incompatibility. The pharmaceutical company operates various
information systems including SAP for enterprise resource planning, Microsoft Office 2013 on a Windows 7
platform, and several applications supporting customer relationship management. Most members of the
sales team regularly travel to visit customers in metropolitan and regional areas.
The CIO is wishing to understand the potential costs, benefits, and risks associated with this. Moreover, the
CIO is seeking your recommendations on how to assess the feasibility of adopting BYOD and guidance on
how a BYOD policy should be structured to maximise benefits, minimise costs, and mitigate risk. The CIO is
also aware that employees are already informally using their own devices for some business activities.
You are required to prepare a 2,000 word report that:
1. Briefly describes BYOD and the outlook for the adoption of these programs in organisations.
2. Outlines the benefits, costs, and risks associated with implementing a BYOD program for the
company's sales team.
3. Describes how the company should assess the feasibility of implementing a BOYD program.
4. Recommends the minimum standards and requirements that the BYOD policy should specify for:
(a) employees (e.g., code of conduct), and (b) the devices, operating systems and applications
provided by employees as part of a BYOD program. 2
A large amount of material has been written on this topic. The KBS library portal has links to several
academic databases (e.g., ProQuest and Emerald) containing journal articles and other resources on this
topic. Google Scholar will also help you to locate relevant materials.
You will find that there are varying perspectives on this issue. Whilst some authors are very positive
regarding the benefits of BYOD, other authors are more cautious and highlight the various risks involved.
You will need to read and consider a range of sources to develop a balanced and more nuanced
perspective.
Your report's analysis and recommendations should be clearly explained, logically presented, and firmly
based on evidence. You are free to structure the report as your group sees fit. Your aim should be to
produce a report that follows a logical order taking the reader from a situational analysis to your group's
recommendations and the rationale for these. It is essential that you carefully cite and reference (minimum
10 references) appropriate material supporting your analysis and recommendations. Failure to do so will
attract heavy penalties. Please see the CIS1000 subject outline for details on required standards of
academic integrity.
