Task 2 Case Study

A major retailer wants to invest heavily on a large private satellite communication system that provides state of the art voice, data, and video transmission between stores and regional headquarters. When an item is sold, the scanner software will update the stock control system in real time. As a result, store transactions will be passed on to regional and national headquarters instantly, which will keep the stock records up to date. Currently, the transactions are uploaded at the end of a business day. This means the replenishing of the stock can be very slow and the store can end up with empty shelves. The retailer feels that this technology of instant communication and feedback will allow it to react more quickly to changes in the market, giving the company a competitive advantage. For example, even in bad weather, the nearest warehouse to the stores can keep the shelves of the stores replenished.
