There is a rapid increase in the number of elderly people in the society. This has resulted in an increase in care homes in the UK and other developed nations. There are several challenges in long-term care such as the growth in numbers of older adults as well as very advanced in age; dementia; shortcomings of institutional care; increased informal carers; and financial constraints etc. Therefore, developing more effective and sustainable healthcare models is a pressing task in the UK and in the world. Innovation and technology may be an answer. In School of Engineering we are developing a wearable wireless life monitoring system to be used by the elderly people, disabled people and those people suffering from long-term medical conditions in case of an emergency when at home. The operation of the proposed system will be based on vital signs monitoring and advanced electronic and wireless technologies. As a part of the system, an imminent falling alarm monitor will be designed based on a new idea we found from our research. It is expected that the designed device could be implemented and tested.
