Assignment title: Information
Description
A literature review is a critical analysis of published sources, or literature, on a particular topic. It is an assessment of the literature and provides a summary, classification, comparison and evaluation.
An important skill for any graduate student is the ability to independently read and critique research papers. In this assignment, you are to choose a HCI research question related to one of the given topic and conduct a literature review for the research question.
This literature review be around 2000-2500 words, double-spaced, font 12.
The literature review should start with a research problem/question in relation to one of the topics from the list below:
• Wearable interface
• Virtual reality
• Web interface
• Gaming interface
• Robots
• Smart home
• Smart city
Example of research question:
• How multisensory user interfaces are used in games?
• What are the factors affecting the users navigation behaviour in virtual reality environment?
Discuss with your lecturer to confirm if your research question is appropriate.
The literature review should include a comprehensive discussion and review of the topics and its evolution; including major innovations and developments in the area. The literature review should include references from credible and relevant references.
You should also highlight the strengths, weaknesses and omissions of the literature, providing a critique of the research. Hence, the language used in a literature review is often evaluative and demonstrates your perspectives of the literature in relation to your topic.
Possible ways of structuring a literature review
• Chronological organisation: The discussion of the research /articles is ordered according to an historical or developmental context.
• The 'Classic' studies organisation: A discussion or outline of the major writings regarded as significant in your area of study. (Remember that in nearly all research there are 'benchmark' studies or articles that should be acknowledged).
• Topical or thematic organisation: The research is divided into sections representing the categories or conceptual subjects for your topic. The discussion is organised into these categories or subjects.
• Inverted pyramid organisation: The literature review begins with a discussion of the related literature from a broad perspective. It then deals with more and more specific or localised studies which focus increasingly on the specific question at hand.
