Assignment title: Management
In this assignment, you are to choose an employment relations dispute that has been reported in the media. Provide a brief background to the dispute in terms of identifying who were the parties to the dispute and who, if any, parties intervened in the dispute. What were the main issues in contention? How did the parties use the various options available to them under the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth) to press their claims and interests? If the dispute was resolved, how was it resolved? If the dispute is still underway, how is the dispute likely to be resolved? In completing this assignment, you will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the pluralist, neo-institutional approach of the set text. You should also contrast this approach with an analysis using the radical approach. Although you are free to identify a different dispute, possible disputes that you could consider are: • the Qantas bargaining dispute with the Australian Licenced Aircraft Engineers Association (ALAEA); the Transport Workers Union (TWU); and the Australian and International Pilots Association (AIPA); or • the BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) dispute with the Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU), the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) and the Electrical Trade Union (ETU) in the Bowen Basin coalmines (Queensland); or • Fairfax Media and the AMWU, the Media, Entertainment and the Arts Alliance (MEAA), the Australian Services Union (ASU), the United Services Union (USU), the Communications Electrical and Plumbing Union (CEPU) and the Australian Council of Trade Unions over the Fairfax decision to restructure its organisation, including its printing operations.
