Assignment requirements This unit has three assignments to enable students to practise and apply the study skills taught in this unit. As with all units in this course, students are required to submit all assignments. Ensure you keep a copy of all material submitted. Three academic articles relevant to the topic identified 2. Quality of each of the articles meets Brick's (2011) five tests 3. Reference list is arranged in alphabetical order 4. Reference list is correctly formatted in APA 6 style 5. Notes written on one article include context of the article's argument, core ideas, brief definitions of key words, and comment on the article's relevance to the topic. 6. Evidence of familiarity with relevant literature and theory Presentation 7. Notes within 10% of required word length (500 words) Referencing 8. In-text referencing guidelines followed as specified in the Academic Skills Guide, and if not covered in the ASG then by the APA convention (6th edition) 9. List of references provided as outlined in the Academic Skills Guide, and if not covered by the ASG then by the APA convention (6th edition) Total Mark: /30 Assignment 1: Literature search, note taking and referencing using the APA style Assignment Type Weighting Word Count Week Due Literature search, note taking and referencing activity 30% 500 5 Purpose The purpose of this assignment is threefold: to apply the skills you have learned about searching for academic resources and evaluating their quality and relevance to the topic to take notes (in your own words) from an academic article; and to construct a reference list using the APA 6 style. Process This assignment gets you working on one of your assignments in another unit. If you are not enrolled in another unit, use the sample topic in the textbox below as your focus for this assignment (this assignment comes from the core unit the Psychology of Health and Wellness). Sample topic: Discuss the following statement: "Health and wellness is more than the absence of disease. Therefore being in a state of health and wellness requires more than medical treatment" For the purpose this first assignment, locate three journal articles or chapters using key words such as: well-being, health and wellness, psychological health 1. Using the ACAP eLibrary databases, locate three journal articles or chapters relevant to your first assignment in another unit (or, the sample topic above) 2. Assess the quality of each of your articles using the five tests of reliability discussed in Chapter 6 of your textbook (Brick, 2011, p. 64). Only select articles that meet the five tests of reliability. 3. When you have selected your three references, read one of them carefully and take notes using dot points (500 words). Ensure your notes cover the broader context of the article's argument, the core ideas of the article, brief definitions of key words, and some comment on how the article may be relevant to your topic. To organise this information, you may wish to use headings. 4. Organise your three references into the current APA style of referencing. 5. Apply a spell check to your document (in the Review tab of Word) and check you written expression. MAH161014_16519_41364 Introduction to the Unit Unit overview This foundation unit aims to provide students with a solid base for continuing their academic study at higher education level. Students are introduced to the research and study skills necessary for academic success. Skills such as effective reading, note taking, paraphrasing, critical thinking and academic referencing are covered. In this unit, students are given an opportunity to plan and structure an essay or report relevant to their degree. The use of Turn-It-In as a self-assessment tool in academic writing will be introduced. Students will also be introduced to the information and technology communication (ICT) skills required for online learning.
